There should be a joint statement from the five unions in the next day or so (which also mentions pay, jobs, and nationally agreed employment conditions).

For now, here is some further detail on what our dispute is about and what we UCU members will be balloted on nationally:

Our dispute relates to the 2025/26 joint HE trade union national claim, specifically:

1. A pay uplift that is at least RPI + 3.5% or £2,500, whichever is the higher, on all pay points;

2. National agreement to avoid redundancies, course closures, and cuts to academic disciplines across the sector;

3. The protection of national agreements relating to terms and conditions of employment, including the 2004 framework agreement, the Post-92 contract for Post-92 institutions, and HE2000.

Many of us in UCU work almost daily with dedicated colleagues in Unite, together supporting UCU members.

It grieves me to know their working conditions are harming them

Why do we strike? We’ll let our members give you some reasons why.

“I was off sick with work-related stress. I started crying every time I sat at my desk and I developed insomnia. I was having suicidal thoughts- my family were so scared. The stress at UCU is systemic and a direct result of a chaotic organisation that isn't functioning- there is no plan, no vision, no functioning management structure."

“ ...watching so many wonderful colleagues get sick and in some cases not come back has been the most painful part of this though. Hearing black colleagues accused of unprofessionalism, insubordination & aggression, for doing the same things their white colleagues do... and then repeated denial that this is racism."

“This is an organisation that does not care about staff development, never mind wellbeing... I could disappear tomorrow and I don't think anyone would know."
