I feel once again compelled to emphasis the digitizing in the literal scanning sense is fairly unimportant if it is not accompanied with metadata providing context for discovery. Both humans and AI will make things up when they don't know what they are looking at.

It's starting to break me a little bit. Especially since I was just at XOXO Fest, and Readercon before that, and they both did an excellent job of dealing with covid. It's very doable, folks! You can throw a cool event and still protect your attendees!
I do not love it when conventions pretend there is nothing they can do about COVID. I do not love it at all.

It's amazing to me that "criticizing the use of AI" is supposedly classism, but "building a product on the stolen work of people with a median annual income of $25k and refusing to compensate them because you know they can't afford lawyers" isn't.

scholasticide: as many students go back to school around the world at this time of year, there are no schools left to go back to in Gaza. Not a single university that wasn't bombed to bits, and basically no functioning K-12 schools.

Literally all you have to say about KOSA: "A site can't tell who's a minor without age-verifying every visitor to the site. I don't want to have to scan my face or my ID every time I visit any site on the internet and I don't want that information out there to get hacked."

Literally all you have to say about KOSA: "A site can't tell who's a minor without age-verifying every visitor to the site. I don't want to have to scan my face or my ID every time I visit any site on the internet and I don't want that information out there to get hacked."

and even if someone thinks "well I don't like/look at porn so why should it be a priority for me?" it's important to remember that when christofascists say "porn" they also mean age-appropriate comprehensive sex education, media with queer/trans people in it, and picture books about gay penguins.
I know smut may seem like a frivolous thing to be upset about, but crushing it is part of fascism. Controlling all forms of sexual expression is fascism. Only allowing certain kinds is fascism. Smut peddlers are always canaries in the coal mines.
