We'll consider any combination of these specialisms in social and theoretical philosophy. You may have equal levels of research specialism in both, or one may be more dominant; the two areas may reflect two aspects of your work or different non-intersecting areas of interest. Spread the word! 2/2

Miira Tuominen and I edited this new book from Brill with no fewer than 25 chapters on various aspects of ancient and medieval philosophy in Greek, Arabic, and Latin texts. Actually there's a little Persian in there too.

Trump is building a personalist regime where every university must bend the knee or lose funding and every business must bend the knee or face tariffs, H-1B fees, and regulatory blackmail. You can't cover each domain in isolation; they are all the same story.

Awarding scientific grants based on scientific merit? That pales in comparison to my strategy, giving grants based on political loyalty

White House considers funding advantage for colleges that align with Trump policies The proposal could potentially transform the government's vast research funding operation, which has long awarded university grants based on scientific merit.

Some other highlights from EMST: Janis Rafa's multisensory installation "We Betrayed the Horses", Britta Marakatt-Labba's embroideries, and Nabil Boutros's "Celebrities/Ovine Condition" (portrait photographs of 65 sheep). The building is also amazing, with a terrace overlooking the Acropolis. 2/2

Anyone in Athens soon, visit the "Why Look at Animals?" exhibition at EMST. Of course varied, but a high hit rate. I LOVED the 8 conceptually and visually amazing chronophotographs of bird flight paths by Xavi Bou (xavibou.com). His Ornitographies book at home on a lazy Saturday is a real treat. 1/2

Finding new, more foolish, ways to make the future of the UK's higher education sector more perilous isn't easy, but somehow the head of the OfS has managed it. The decision to create that organisation was a disaster.
hetanshah.bsky.social
Wait what now the new OfS chair wants to start using the TEF ratings to make consequential decisions about university funding including fee increases? Better make sure it is a very reliable measure
www.thetimes.com/article/8a02...
In his first interview since joining the OfS in July, he said: "The rating that
institutions get will have consequences. At the moment they don't really, because they're just used much as a branding exercise by institutions concerned.
"This will be about particular opportunities being more open to institutions which have gold or silver rather than bronze for instance, or being more favourably viewed. The DfE is currently using that as a criterion for who can get access to modular funding from the Student Loans Company, as part of the lifelong learning entitlement.
"So there will be consequences in the future to having different TEF ratings." He said: "You can also see it being used to shape the sort of fee increase that institutions could put in place. One option might be to base future fee increases on TEF rating. You can see why you might do that."

Columbia University has handed over its undergraduate admissions process to Donald Trump and his MAGA allies, who will now decide at their sole discretion whether the university has admitted enough white people. It's no longer an independent institution.

we would be in a much better state in this country if we stopped focusing on anointing a chosen few working class students into Oxbridge, and instead properly funded all the different sorts of universities that attract students from a wide range of backgrounds already

"support diverted from certain subjects including journalism and media studies towards lab-based courses" we ALREADY DO THIS, it is why the tuition fee is the same for humanities subjects as STEM subjects, we cross-subsidize internally across faculties, why do no government ministers understand this
