MAE SOT, Thailand (AP) - Mohammed Taher clutched the lifeless body of his 2-year-old son and wept. Ever since his family's food rations stopped arriving at their internment camp in Myanmar in April, the father had watched helplessly as his once-vibrant baby boy weakened, suffering from diarrhea and begging for food.
On May 21, exactly two weeks after Taher's little boy died, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio sat before Congress and declared: "No one has died" because of his government's decision to gut its foreign aid program. Rubio also insisted: "No children are dying on my watch."
That, Taher says, "is a lie."

I think people often conflate "Hard and pretty frequently not a barrel of monkeys" with "It fucking sucks." Which, it's understandable why they would make that conflation, but it's also extremely rewarding (and, not at all infrequently, quite a lot of fun), so it doesn't remotely suck.

It's life-transforming joy, but that's impossible to make real to people who haven't felt it, while "we basically got no more than an hour or two of uninterrupted sleep for ten weeks" is a lot easier to understand.

There's a reason this is the original and canonical philosophical example of an experience whose positive value cannot be understood without undergoing it, and therefore resists rational decision-making.

Sora is not the real problem here. The real problem is that in 12, at most 24 months, there will be a Sora clone from Tencent or Alibaba that is just as good and can be run by anybody with a 5099, at which point everyone in society needs to rapidly agree to treat all digital video as fake, period.
