An actual hot take: Too many authors are afraid of editors watering down their voice or whatever and not afraid enough of editors letting you put any old slop on the page.

For the Mid-Autumn Festival, I translated the 17th century failson, epicure, and memoirist Zhang Dai's account of the annual Mid-Autumn singing competition on Tiger Hill in Suzhou. www.burninghou.se/p/mid-autumn...

If U.S. states have any degree of sovereignty, if there’s any states’ rights at all, it is the right not to be invaded by the armed forces of another U.S. state.

Closeup of a structural pillar painted with black chalkboard paint. A chalk drawing of an old school computer in grey and blue, with “Welcome to DH” in yellow letters. Blue arm-like lines are coming out of the computer

i know hegseth's speech was intended to tell the military they won't get prosecuted for war crimes and beating your wife won't hold up getting promoted to O-4, but bringing in trump fresh from death's door is a really persuasive way to unconsciously tell them the crimes jubilee may not last too long

Today in my crime fiction/ghost stories class we are talking about the Peony Pavilion. I absolutely love that the first scene just straight up gives away the whole plot. Essentially, Tang Xianzu is saying, "buckle up, this is what we are going to be talking about for the next 24 hours."
