I’ve long argued that the U.S. public mental health system needs radical reform but now, a month after returning from Trieste, half-way through my tour of Australia, I think we’ve lost the plot in even deeper ways. A 🧵

🚨 Important new op-ed in @thehill.com by @jjjordynjensen.bsky.social & @viscidula.bsky.social

As political leaders push forced psychiatric confinement, the federal government moves to dismantle PAIMI—one of the only safeguards against abuse in psych settings.

Read at thehill.com/opinion/heal...
A dark, shadowy corridor with dim overhead lighting and labeled doors fades into the distance. At the center, a silhouetted figure stands facing forward, casting a long shadow. Bold white text reads: “Trump, RFK Jr. are pushing psychiatric confinement, not mental health care” with smaller text below: “Jordyn Jensen & Nev Jones.” The Hill's blue-and-white logo appears in the bottom right corner.

Three Yale professors who have written extensively on authoritarianism are leaving the U.S. “We’re like people on the Titanic saying our ship can’t sink,” Marci Shore said. “And what you know as a historian is that there is no such thing as a ship that can’t sink.”

9/9 How should we fund this better approach? "Slow the cash flow to law enforcement, reject wasteful and ineffective involuntary care, and reclaim simply caring, as we do in Canada, for each other."

8/9 Prevention is possible—through investment in supportive housing and accessible healthcare with on-demand access to voluntary mental health supports, not through expanded policing powers and involuntary detention.

⚠️ FORCED CARE IS COMPASSIONATE CARE? ⚠️

Alberta's new Compassionate Intervention Act allows police to force people into treatment. A doctor serving unhoused populations witnessed a troubling reality with expanding involuntary treatment while the system remains broken.

Here is a key paragraph:

The proposal would reduce the more than $47 billion budget of the NIH to $27 billion — a roughly 40 percent cut. It would consolidate NIH’s 27 institutes and centers into just eight.

I've already had two federal grants terminated and face a 33% pay cut due to future terminations. It's painful, but not as painful as the conversations I'm having every day with brilliant trainees in graduate school and postdoctoral positions who see little future for themselves in US science.
