Used to sell yarn. Then I sold bikes. Now I just sling coffee, knit, and try to stay sane.

As you shop, consider how the material will age, not just how long it will last. Will it age beautifully over time? Can you easily repair it? Will the repairs add to the item's appeal? As always, buy less, buy better, and take care of what you own. True beyond clothes

I’m sorry, but if this is news to you, you haven’t been paying attention. This is par for the course with ford.
joshmatlow.bsky.social
You work hard for every dollar you earn. You pay your taxes, but expect they’ll go toward the services & infrastructure we all rely on every day. And then you find out your money’s gone into Doug Ford’s slush fund to hand out to his friends. This corrupt government has to go.

I consumed a lot of little memorial tidbits yesterday but there was only one I couldn’t stomach. Maybe it read as performative, maybe it’s that news outlet focus on it over the silence on the other is so stark by comparison. I dunno. This whole thing still shakes me.

An adult driver angry at a child they hit with their car.

Our car culture summed up in one video.
robsonfletcher.com
Police in Airdrie, Alberta (just north of Calgary) say this driver hit a 17-year-old girl in a marked crosswalk, got out of the vehicle, and appeared to get upset at the teenager before driving away.

They released this video and are now trying to identify the driver.

Watching my “cohort” (let’s call it) burn out and/or leave was sad. It’s hard to help motivate the next batch as they come through the doors at the beginning of their own cargo /e-bike journeys 😅🫣😔

seeing young parents experiencing what I did many years ago on a bike getting involved and fighting for change.
ahh yes I remember having some energy and hope.

Imagine if a water pipe broke and the water department had to ask city council whether to fix it and then spend 12 months asking everyone on the street their opinion of how to fix it before they could start work.

That's how cities manage curbs.

Please, just stop sending me AI videos of Dad. Stop believing I wanna see it or that I'll understand, I don't and I won't. If you're just trying to troll me, I've seen way worse, i'll restrict and move on. But please, if you've got any decency, just stop doing this to him and to me, to everyone even, full stop. It's dumb, it's a waste of time and energy, and believe me, it's NOT what he'd want.
To watch the legacies of real people be condensed down to 'this vaguely looks and sounds like them so that's enough,
, just so
other people can churn out horrible TikTok slop puppeteering them is maddening. You're not making art, you're making disgusting, over-processed hotdogs out of the lives of human beings, out of the history of art and music, and then shoving them down someone else's throat hoping they'll give you a little thumbs up and like it.
Gross. And for the love of EVERYTHING, stop calling it 'the future. Al is just badly recycling and regurgitating the past to be reconsumed. You are taking in the Human Centipede of content, and from the very very end of the line, all while the folks at the front laugh and laugh, consume and consume.

How are they even still “private” schools while receiving public money? Bizarre.

When newly-elected Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson started converting car lanes to bike lanes in 2009, pundits claimed it was political suicide. In 2018, he stepped down after three terms as the longest-serving mayor in the city's history. So what can this tale teach us about so-called "bikelash"?🧵

Oooh that’s a good way to put it: “the economy rewards ownership over work”.
cargobikeben.bsky.social
You can’t fix living standards while the economy rewards ownership over work. Until we rebuild housing and transport around people instead of assets, the cost-of-living crisis will never end.

Not gonna lie, after 3/4 days of aura migraines, sometimes more than one a day, I’m starting to get terrified of if I can’t go back to work... financially we’d be fine and I need to remind myself that, but it limits us a LOT…

When I was a kid, I saw diversity all over the media I consumed because we all understood it was a good thing. Now suddenly any display of diversity is considered dangerous. Wonder why.
vocame.bsky.social
But maybe my understanding is wrong 🤷🏼‍♀️
vocame.bsky.social
That’s my thought. It’s anxiety inducing knowing that I can’t get a boost until October, after the wave, when my understanding was that it’s effectiveness does wane a year out (ie when the wave hits).
vocame.bsky.social
Question: if COVID waves are absolutely happening end of summer, why are we waiting until late October to boost the majority of the population? Why not June…?

Beds are amazing. Everyone should have a bed. Why do we live in a world with billionaires when not everyone has a bed???

I have completed my nonsense.
A pale hand holds a sleep mask up, lit from below in a sensual way. The mask is a dusty pink with contrast blue lace trimming, against a teal background. a tag sticks out that reads “you’re a good egg” (with an illustration of an egg!).

I am truly a ridiculous human. I hate synthetic fabrics. So here I am, cutting into my swath of precious raw silk because it’s too narrow to use for any other part of me. Batting is Canadian wool. 🫣
Dusty Pink fabric cut into the shape of eye masks; one piece has wool batting on top, the other has blue floral lace across the middle. A crumpled pile below them will be the headband piece. There’s thread, and a sewing machine spool, and a label that reads “you’re a good egg”

The "AI" responses that Google gives about me and my work are consistently error-prone, which I know because I am me. If I know Google's "AI" responses give incorrect answers about things I know about, I can't trust it to give correct answers about things I don't know. So, no, I don't use it.

i dunno why the idea we are going to have to use it is so pervasive. If a percentage of our society's data output can be replaced with meaningless placeholder, why were we producing that data in the first place?

💯

What got us here was “greed is good”, followed by unfettered neoliberalism and the orthodox belief that “free”markets had all the answers.

Now a handful of large companies and ultra-wealthy individuals control almost everything.

The worship of money, celebrity and power have led us to fascism.

My new book is about this! And almost no mainstream journalism outlet has had me on to talk about what is the really big story of this era! Go buy Corporate Control to learn how it happened.
jamespmcleod.ca
I think in the long run, the really big story of this era is that about a dozen absolutely massive corporations took control of unprecedented swaths of the economy, human attention, and the flow of information.

I think many of our problems are downstream from that.
