On its 4th anniv, I'm reposting for bsky my most popular Twitter thread: a defense of the "inactive protagonist," which birthed the essay below, in exactly the way it was written.

But first I need to contextualize how and why it was written.

Let me take you through the anatomy of an active protagonist, one that everyone can relate to. We’ll make our protagonist—we’ll call him John—young and healthy, male, of humble origins (perhaps he’s f...

I just ran the whole gamut of emotions reading this Jack Klausner story. It’s eerie and sad and nothing is explained and you don’t get any sweet cathartic release at the end and it genuinely made me well up and want to cry. Really good.

I do sometimes describe submitting as a numbers game.

To be clear I do not mean you should use the plagiarism machine to flood the markets with slop!

But rather, that if you keep submitting that weird story you wrote earnestly you may find the right weird editor for it (I have been that editor)
'Acceptance rate' or % is irrelevant because we're not choosing randomly between all subs. If you send BCS urban F, your odds are 0%. If you send BCS a story that makes me weep, your odds are 99%. It's not a lottery where all entrants have equal chance. Write YOUR story the best you can and sub it.
2- There's been a lot of emphasis over the last few years on the numbers game with short fic publishing. Folks are using places that give them a stream of stats like acceptance rates. I think this might be creating the thought that more things on submission increases pub chances. (It doesn't.)

Toda essa admiração era compreensível. O primeiro conto de Julio Cortázar, “Casa Tomada”, é uma obra-prima. E mais: foi escrito de uma vez só, logo após o escritor acordar de um pesadelo. +

In early 2023, we started getting flooded with "AI" generated stories. A handful of other publications (Asimov's, F&SF, Analog) were also hit to varying degrees, but (according to my 2023 survey) we were the canaries. All the rest were reporting low-to-none. This year's survey results will be uglier
