Today my @nytimes.com colleagues and I are launching a new series called Lost Science. We interview US scientists who can no longer discover something new about our world, thanks to this year‘s cuts. Here is my first interview with a scientist who studied bees and fires. Gift link: nyti.ms/3IWXbiE

Debunkinhg takes hours, misinformation seconds.

Don´t just post. If you didn´t read or understand the paper, don´t post it with conclusions from others. Be very careful with low-impact journals and with predatory journals as well as with pre-prints! If unsure, ask experts, or wait for them.

My quote of the day

All of my remaining realisable assets are to be disbursed … to constitute a fund, the interest on which is to be distributed annually as prizes to those who, during the preceding year, have conferred the greatest benefit to humankind.

the “preceding year” requirement is kind of interesting.

Cancer misinformation kills. Literally.

Cancer patients who refuse conventional treatments and rely on unsupported therapies die more often and faster.

Colorectal cancer patients:
A 4.57-fold increased risk of death
Five-year survival plummets from 79.4% to 32.7%.

Here's the assignment folks. Write op-eds for your local papers and campus newspapers too. Just. Say. No. This is a classic authoritarian move and risks the future of higher education and science and innovation in the US. Speak out today. No time to lose. www.nytimes.com/2025/10/02/o...

"Jane Goodall showed us what a life in science could look like: rigorous discovery paired with fierce advocacy for what you study. She gave the world six decades of groundbreaking research on chimpanzees and their habitats, then turned that knowledge into a global movement for conservation." (1/2)
