How do!

We're Walk Ride Stockport, new to Bluesky and with a shiny new logo. We're all about making Stockport a better place to walk, wheel and cycle.

Back in June we celebrated the completion of the helix ramp (aka the HelterSKelter) at Stockport Interchange – take a look!

Well said @walkridestocky.bsky.social - here’s evidence from #Edinburgh.

It’s the standard change curve.

Like every city, despite vocal opposition, this multi-year study of an #Edinburgh street and cycling scheme shows massive benefits and increasing public and local business support.

Every city that delivers schemes well helps deliver social and economic benefits.

We need more #StreetsNOTRoads!
List of scheme benefits:

🚶‍♀️ 🚲 95% of people interview travelled by sustainable means

⬆️🚶‍♀️pedestrian satisfaction up

⬆️🚲Local residents cycling more to work 8% to 12% to 15% over three years

⬆️📈residents support increased from 49% to 68%, opposition drops from 11% to 9%

⬆️🅿️satisfaction with local parking is up

⬆️🛍️Traders support for scheme increases from 12% to 60%

⬇️ 🛒vacant shops down - it’s up in similar areas in Edinburgh

⬆️💳Mastercard data shows local spending in scheme area up 20% (wow!)

⬇️🚗traffic levels down 27% since 2018

Any roadworks cause disruption, and it's a fair challenge that the council isn't always good at communicating when work is going to happen. But as a way to make it safer and easier to get around places without a car, it's totally necessary. More journeys on foot or bike mean fewer cars on the roads.
walkridestocky.bsky.social
The work on Compstall Road is happening to safely link the quieter roads either side of the busy main road. Confident road cyclists such as those interviewed in the article might not see the use - but it's not intended for them.

As well as providing a route between Romiley and Stockport, it will link homes to nearby schools. The school run is a major source of congestion, so by providing safe non-car routes we're addressing that while making kids healthier and better prepared for lessons.

We've built lots of new sustainable travel routes in the past 5 years, so our Corporate Leadership Team (CLT) got on their bikes for a guided tour.

A highlight was riding the new ‘Bridgescape’ path, from Station Rd through Interchange Park and down the Spiral Ramp onto the TPT.

Walk Ride GM was horrified by the recent news of a hate crime against Klaudia Mitura on the Ashton Canal.

There is no excuse for violence, including this example of male violence against women.

Incidents like this are made more likely by a widespread press and media bias against cyclists.

Fed up with pavement parking?

We're supporting @livingstreets.bsky.social to show where pavements are used as car parks to the detriment of all who walk/wheel.

Go & take photos (make sure you cover over reg numbers) & upload them to the Living Streets map: lnkd.in/ekEmPn3q

🚨 URGENT ASK to help us push micromobility forwards in Greater Manchester 🛴

Your local authority has until 21st October 2025 to apply for an e-scooter trial. We believe e-scooters are a crucial part of the shift away from cars, so PLEASE email your councillor and ask them to apply.

I keep meaning to go and check it out, but Street View has beaten me to it for the new filter under the Peak Forest Canal on Green Lane, Romiley.

Surprised this big local win hasn’t been celebrated more. One of those “wouldn’t it be nice if” that they actually did! Well done Stockport Council.
Before: narrow blind bridge under a 200 year old canal is one way only for vehicles with footways barely existing. A car takes up the full width. Cycles have no way into the town from this direction (and almost no other ‘good’ routes). After: same bridge is filtered to motor vehicles with bollards on each side and a dedicated two-way cycle track as a gateway into the town, linking into other improvements as part of an Active Travel Fund project. A footway is provided to the side with tactile crossing.

Are we still debating LTNs? If so, this very thorough meta-study about LTNs in London by @centreforlondon.bsky.social says they are generally more popular than believed, and that there is strong evidence they work well. So there we are.
