The evidence shows this hasn't happened in Leith - overall traffic levels are down across the area, including on all boundary roads except one.

Space for a few cars or several businesses to have seating? Which is better for the economy?
The Shore, Edinburgh. Car parking, not seating, on both sides of a pretty street. South Queensferry. Car parking, not seating, on both sides of a pretty street.

“we’ve banned pavement parking now, so we can scrimp on the bollards and send an attendant once a week”

Removing bollards and allowing cars to park where they want will not be successful.
Visualisation of improvements project Actual layout now including bollards to prevent pavement parking.

Counterflow cycling is welcome and maybe some additional space for pedestrians (if the pavements can be kept clear)?

At least it’s realistic - any design is usually littered by cars without putting in bollards.

This is amazing! A colleague found it in her cavity wall whilst doing some DIY. A newspaper article from the 1960s bemoaning the introduction of some 50mph speed limits. "Poor British Motorists" - some things never change, do they?!
A crumpled old page from the Daily Sketch newspaper, dated 1963. The headline is "Have another think about it, Mr Marples!" And the story basically bleats on about how unfair it is that some experimental 50mph speed limits are being introduced. Apparently without consulting motorists. A logo saying Poor British Motorists is in the top right hand corner and implies that this sort of article is a regularly recurring theme.

20 minute neighbourhoods need green spaces.

#Edinburgh has the Pentlands.
Sign at Clubbiedean’s Cafe with a poem:

“The more we tramp these breezy uplands,
the more friendly they become;

and the more we love then, the more they give to us, their call is unmistakable

and their appeal is as varied as the sky of an April day”

Enforcement isn’t sustainable - you’d need someone there 24/7.

That’s where you need real 24/7 enforcement with @worldbollardassoc.bsky.social! ♟️

A bicycle is posed on a wet set of concrete steps; it is almost entirely encrusted with barnacles. Another, non-dredged-up bicycle leans against a step in the background.

(Closing Bridge Road, Colinton would be difficult. But perhaps some occasional Sunday morning pedestrianisation or a Bus Gate could make this more ocal High Street and less a through road. #StreetsNOTroads)

A pretty #Edinburgh high street closed on a Sunday morning:

🛍️ 🛒 Shopping street to boost local businesses Sunday sales?

🥖Sunday market?

🏃‍♀️Space for the local running club Sunday Coffee without the normal traffic noise & pollution?

Nope, Roadworks - we can but dream! #StreetNOTroads
Bridge Road, Colinton. Historic local high street with many local businesses, but with no space for businesses and tight pavements. Roadworks mean that Bridge Road, Colinton is blocked by a Road Closed sign and cones Munro’s, the local coffee shop, has a Sunday morning Running club. Here runners stand and chat in the sun outside the shop - usually less pleasant with noise and pollution.

We're back! We've teamed up with @cyclinguk.bsky.social for a Glow Ride on Friday 24th October. Like us, they want to see more women cycling, and for councils to provide more safe infrastructure to enable that.
Light up your bike with lights and sparkle and join us at Middle Meadow Walk at 7.30pm.

Glasgow’s building it - they’re coming.

Glasgow is just as hilly, wetter and faces the same legal/funding hurdles #Edinburgh does. Shows it can be done.

Build it and they’ll come.
