A fabulous picture postcard of Glasgow Cross at the junction of the Trongate and High Street. The picture is certainly pre-1896 as there's no sign of Glasgow Cross station yet. The works to the left of the picture are the cut and cover tunnel being dug for the railway line.

📰 STV News: More bikes than cars on main road at rush hour for first time figures show.

🚲 Great summary of the boom in cycling that's happening where new, safe, connected infrastructure is being built in Scotland. #BuildItAndTheyWillCome

We’re looking for your views on our plans to improve provision for walking, wheeling and cycling along Dundee Street and in the wider Fountainbridge area.

The consultation is open until 12 January 2026.

"The single most important behaviour, design or regulation for creating streets conducive to walking and cycling, was physical separation between the modes"

We've got a new study out, learning from a broad mixture of street users, planners and designers

www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...
Highlights
For marginalised street users mode separation is the key to human-scale movement.
Streets conducive to walking and cycling have functional, safe and accessible design.
Professionals must approach street design, regulation and user behaviour holistically.
Combinations of influencing factors persuade people to either use or avoid a street.
There are no easy fixes to the public realm that will work for all non-drivers.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
South Queensferry residents already suffer from the effects of excessive traffic with actual and perceived risk
to life, excessive noise, pollution and negative health impacts of increasing levels of inactivity, especially
amongst younger generations. With over 1600 properties built or planned to be built in just a few years within
the town, Edinburgh Council must act now to make active travel a more attractive option for people to choose
to travel to, from and around South Queensferry.
Spokes broadly welcome these proposals as we believe this could potentially be the start of what is required to
provide adults and children with the opportunity for active travel which for most does not currently exist.
There is an opportunity for a wider active travel network throughout South Queensferry and these proposals as
the currently stand exclude other areas of South Queensferry, for example other schools around the town. All
children and adults should have the right to exercise for free and to travel actively safely and we would urge
the Council, the Scottish Government and other funding partners to take a proactive approach to planning this
(and other) active travel networks, not just individual routes that are not joined up one of the main proposals maps in the consultation, showing the active travel route beside and crossing a road

More detailed article here from the archaeological team themselves, including a map showing where this is - right on the edge of the old centre of Glasgow (which today more or less marks the boundary between the centre and the east end). www.guard-archaeology.co.uk/GALNews/?p=824
Map from Guard Archaeology (in linked article), showing the approximate layout of mid-14th century Glasgow, when the population would have been around 1,500 people at the most. The map shows the layout of the main streets of the town: two main east-west streets connected in between by High Street, running from the river up towards the cathedral. The dig site that's uncovered medieval artefacts from this time is marked in a red dot at the centre of the image, close to Glasgow Cross but believed to have been outside the town itself at this time. Google Earth satellite view of the same location in modern Glasgow, with the centre of the image located roughly at Glasgow Cross. The gap site where this dig took place is marked as a red triangle, and yellow lines mark the rough route of streets in 14th century Glasgow, included on the other map.

"A small sliver of medieval Glasgow that somehow survived centuries of building and rebuilding."

A dig that's been going on for weeks at a gap site on the eastern edge of Glasgow city centre (ahead of social housing construction) has turned up fragments of the early medieval expansion of the city.

Something that's obvious from using this route daily is how busy it is in all weathers, like this clip on the way home on what might've been the single wettest day in Glasgow last year.

Hills (which these routes largely avoid), weather... it all peels away when you feel safe getting from A to B.

The same in #Edinburgh. It invested in its public realm to increase walking and cycling and Mastercard reported a 20% increase in local spend.

Amazing news, which comes the same week that traffic survey findings were published, showing more bikes than cars were recorded at morning rush hour on the #SouthCityWay cycle route for the first time this year. 🚲👇

Turns out the window hammock we bought weeks ago is not a total waste after all...

Used to be you'd need to look to cities in NL or Denmark for real-life examples of this. More recently, Paris & London. But the examples are getting closer to home and harder to ignore.

Really profound change is happening where safe, connected spaces for cycling are being created in Scotland 🚲🚲🚲🚲

Really didn't appreciate how good a fit Luther Dickinson was for them in his stint on lead guitar c.2007-11. By far the best after Marc Ford. E.g. the solo here, about 7mins into Wiser Time (then Rich's solo on his weird custom Teya La Perla isn't half bad either). #TheBlackCrowes
