I'm persuaded: New York Democrats delenda est. We need leadership from state parties that have actually fought and won against the modern Right Wing political machine, not leaders from cozy fortress states.

WA's historic landmarking reform bill, HB 1576, just passed the House 95 - 0!

Amazing to see unanimous bipartisan support for ending the abuse of landmarking to block homebuilding.
I updated this article with info on WA's historic landmark reform companion bills, HB 1576 and SB 5554.

Two cases from the mid-teens illustrate how landmarking w/o consent accomplished absolutely nothing except to delay much needed new housing by a decade.

Again, two things that are true: there are genuine frustrations and legitimate criticisms of Dems out there, and there is an entire social media infrastructure trying to get you to be mad at Dems rather than the GOP for their own clicks and $

the Republican party benefits from the existence of self-censoring facts: things which, if true, would require the press to abandon partisan neutrality as immoral. as this would offend the publisher's sensibilities, they cannot be true.
As I’ve noted before, the press is unwilling to recognize that Musk and Vance are at the very least close to neo-Nazis because to do so would mean acknowledging that the press massively failed in promoting them for years
the vice president of the united states is a groyper who spends his online time following nazis and esoteric reactionary influencers is true and yet the press seems completely disinterested in it

Hey in retrospect maybe when Trump's former chief of staff said Trump was a fascist you could've covered it as heavily as you covered Biden's imaginary Parkinson's diagnosis instead of burying it on A14
Every president of both parties going back generations subscribed to the principle that a president doesn't pick the press corps that is allowed in the room to ask him questions. Trump has just declared that he will.
The message is clear. Given that the White House has already kicked one news organization out of the pool because of coverage it does not like, it is making certain everyone else knows that the rest of us can be barred too if the president does not like our questions or stories.

We asked for urgency. We got it. We asked for big gestures. We literally got a man dragging himself out of his hospital bed and getting on a plane after a blood clot. We asked for theatrics. We literally got a mother bringing her newborn on the floor to vote. This is Dems doing the most they can.

DOGE is not a real government agency.

Historic Seattle's January newsletter tells how they've just nominated for landmark status a structurally obsolete apartment building owned by YWCA, which will stall YWCA's plans to redevelop it into 83 new homes.

This is why the state needs to pass the landmarking reform bill HB 1443 / SB 5332.

National politics can be brutal and demoralizing. When I see WA state representatives credit groups like @sngreenways.bsky.social and @seattleyimby.bsky.social for raising local issues, and write awesome bills to fix unsexy but important problems, it gives me hope. Local advocacy works.

This empty lot in Magnolia costs $1.6M. Even if you made a building appear for free, the only way to sell something here for less than $500K would be to build a fourplex/sixplex/etc and spread the cost of the land across several units. Right now, that's illegal!
