HE / HIM / HIS / HIMSELF

My name is Isaac. I am fond of organisms that can be colloquially referred to as a "bug" (such as many invertebrates). I have a neurotic disposition and I was born at exactly 2:27 AM on a Saturday morning.

Day 23 of #InsectAdvent

As the angels spread their wings, so do the flies. Rhamphomyia marginata (Empididae) are found across Europe & unusually for animals, it is the females that form the flirty swarms. Maybe not such angelic behaviour 😉

I've seen this species 3 times now, so I fall in the Obsessed category obviously. Love the little niche creatures who decide to do their own thing - most of our Aphaenogaster species and all others I've personally encountered are ground-dwelling. Also they just look cool. ❤️
Day 18 of my 2025 Favorites: Aphaenogaster mariae!

These little leggy sandpaper creatures are very rarely seen, as they prefer to live in canopies of older forests, so we earthbound creatures must be lucky and/or obsessed enough to see them at the right time; for instance, trailing up a tree trunk

Dendroblatta sobrina, a beautiful cockroach found in rainforests across northern Latin America. At night these stunning roaches can be found foraging on bark of mature trees, usually in small groups containing adults and nymphs. They are hypervigilant and sprint up the trunk upon any sign of danger.

10 years ago today I looked in the moth trap and saw the critter in the first photo. I actually potted it, threw it back in the trap, then re-potted it after having second thoughts! Three days later I had another! (2nd photo). Mecidea lindbergi, 1st UK record, ID'd by @britishbugs.bsky.social

The bulky Brontostoma basalis from Ecuador - incredibly strong and its venom packs a punch! When I took it out of the vial it immediately grabbed my finger and bit it. Was it painful? Yes, for a hot minute. But as always with assassin bugs it is more the speed of action that surprises me the most.
