i don't mean to single out baseball fans here, because you see this in lots of fan communities, but in certain corners people talk as though baseball is real. they think all the players are real people and the stadiums are places you can actually visit. to each their own, but that cannot be healthy

We ran a randomized controlled trial to see how much AI coding tools speed up experienced open-source developers.
The results surprised us: Developers thought they were 20% faster with AI tools, but they were actually 19% slower when they had access to AI than when they didn't.

one of the things you hear a lot is “yeah but AI is genuinely useful for some tasks” and coding is almost always mentioned
Whenever I see "AI ethics concerns" it's always crap like "should Claude have a social security number?!" and not "should OpenAI all be in jail for marketing ChatGPT like it's your friend and designing it to prioritize continuous engagement above all else?"
Oh yeah, Blake Lemoine basically got addicted to talking to the chatbot, personified it, then asked it a bunch of existential questions, to which it regurgitated mashups of 2001 and I, Robot.
2009's MMO addiction is going to look like peanuts compared to the wave of chatbot addiction that's coming.
