PT PhD student by night - interested in the representation of military aviators in popular culture. A librarian for the USAF by day. Easily distracted at all times by biathlon, geopolitical arguments, rugby, murder mysteries, or livestreams of airfields.
The one from 3 years ago was as close to perfect a recruiting piece as could be :) You can't catch that lightning in a bottle with a pale imitation like this bit ;)

One of my favourite genres of art is "Maintainers and air crew stand around with arms crossed or hands on hips and stare at an aircraft that has not behaved in a way expected of it."

I fear I am forever marooned at the second sentence of this post...
(Currently reading Deleuze and frantically waiting for enlightenment to arrive!)
Also you have to teach students how to read in your discipline.

You say read and most people think cast your eyes chronologically over the words on the page and wait for enlightenment to arrive.

You mean a highly specific practice honed by years of education and practice.

Almost time for the first biathlon race of the IBU season :D
(Picture of Sven Fischer, who is long retired but my admiration of him when I first saw biathlon turned me into an unlikely fan of the sport) :)

I loathe this book and everyone in it...an opinion I've been told is due to my lack of intellect. I can't imagine wanting to watch a movie of it, let alone one described as "...long, atmospheric and as ponderous as the taciturn antihero Meursault" ;)

"Unhappy to have Sighted Due to Circumstances" List
* Stonefish (Australia)
* Saltwater crocodile of large size (Australia)
* Bear (Upper Michigan)
* Moose (Alaska)

Introduce yourself with five animals you have seen in the wild.

Heron (Magdalen)

The Yooper in-laws are having a seasonal time (I'm told that's 20 inches - an amount that would end life as we know it in the UK)

#OTD in 1957, six McDonnell RF-101C of the 363rd Tactical Reconnaissance Wing flew "Operation Sun Run" where they set six new transcontinental speed records across the US.

RF-101C 56-0166 was one of the aircraft that set the records and now resides in the US Air Force Museum in Dayton, OH.

What a great idea for a study break; letting the mind shift gears for a while without the attention-sapping downsides of the doomscroll (which I admit to having trouble resisiting...obviously)
It's time to destress and relax 🧘

Did you know we have 8 little wooden puzzles for readers to do on their study breaks? Complete with cute tins, quirky cut-outs, and wooden puzzle boards to lean on!

Each puzzle is small enough to complete as a break in your study schedule ☕🧩😌

Thanks to the Guardian for reminding me the Super Bowl Shuffle exists...and as awkward as it is, it must have made international news because I remember it despite being a kid in Australia at the time ;)

Recently, I had the pleasure of contributing to the US WWII Foundation's latest film project, a documentary focused on an individual serving in England with the Mighty Eighth. Filming at Bletchley Park really added to the day. Check out the Foundation and its extensive free film programme.

All my years exiled in the US and now the UK and I have yet to find a proper 'handheld meat pie' in either place, let alone the breadth and quality of the options in NZ. (Honourable mention to Australia.)
All hail the handheld meat pie.
* New Zealand takes pies (namely, handheld meat pies) so seriously that there are National Pie Awards that get major media coverage. The New Zealand National Library has a whole dedicated category for “Pies — Competitions.”

Pie.
