That's the end of another #FolkloreThursday 🔥🎃🌙

Today's theme was folklore of Ghosts, Monsters, and All Things Spooky! This is @shanonsinn.bsky.social signing off - your last host today! Wishing you the best Spooktober ever 🍁

1883 Bernard Gillam - Gambling with death
A detail from a colour magazine or newspaper illustration. A man in a top hat is smoking a cigar while seated at a table. A skeletal ghost-like figure in white robes is rolling dice from a cup and standing over the man while pointing to the table, which is shaped like a coffin.

A well-known American legend claims blues musician Robert Johnson sold his soul to the devil on the crossroads at midnight -- for musical genius and fame.

Remembered as the godfather of rock music, Johnson died at 27 years old #FolkloreThursday

In folklore, candles flickering oddly were said to mean a ghost was nearby. If the flame guttered without draft, it was a spirit answering unspoken questions. #folklorethursday

Periwinkles are linked to witchcraft, ghosts & supernatural. In Wales if you pluck the flower you will be haunted. However, the plant can also protect you against the dead.

Greetings #FolkloreThursday 🎃

Huge thanks to Crystal @crystalponti.bsky.social for being our host before the break! I'm @shanonsinn.bsky.social your crypt keeper for the next one hour.

Today's theme is "Ghosts, Monsters, & All Things Spooky!" 👀

1898 Josef Mandl 🌙
A 19th Century painting showing a graveyard scene at night. There are several gravestones and disorganized plots and trees. A partly open grave is in the foreground with a shovel laying across it. A luminescent-cloaked apparition is standing behind it and looking down into the ground. Though it is bright, the details of the person are not apparent.

That’s all from me, @crystalponti.bsky.social. Thanks for conjuring up such spine-tingling #FolkloreThursday posts! After a short break, @shanonsinn.bsky.social will rise from the folklore crypt to keep the chills alive. Don’t ghost us… the best scares are still to come! 🦇

An old-fashioned illustration depicts a coven of witches gathered under leafless trees at night. The witches wear pointed hats and tattered cloaks, some flying on broomsticks, while others creep across the ground with crooked postures. Black cats climb the branches and stalk the ground, adding to the eerie scene. A thin crescent moon hangs faintly in the sky above, casting a pale glow over the gathering.

Superstition says mirrors can trap spirits. Covering them after death prevents the soul from being caught inside. Folklore treats reflections as doorways, thin as glass but deep as eternity. #FolkloreThursday

#FolkloreThursday In 1864, a ghostly Woman in Black, veiled like a widow, appeared near Carbondale, Pennsylvania. She presaged a "black fever" epidemic, which killed 400 people and a deadly mine cave-in, which killed 14. When she reappeared in 1892, she was thought the omen of a cholera outbreak.

The wailing figure of a woman known as a banshee or bean sidhe heralds grave misfortune. Whether her cries are the harbinger of a family death or an impending loss, sightings of her are never a good omen.

At ghost story parties in old Edo, 100 candles were lit and one was blown out for each story told. It was said that - if you dared to go that far - a real ghost called Ao Andon would appear out of the smoke of the 100th candle. #folklorethursday art by @yokai.com

Among the many ghosts that have been witnessed haunting the Tower of London is an apparition said to resemble a bear standing on its hind legs. In 1816, the encounter a guard had with this ghostly bear was so intense that he died of fright. #FolkloreThursday
