I'm broken-hearted about the teachers who have to go in and teach their classes while someone on the roster is absent because ICE is holding them in some unknown place. These policies destroy families and communities. It's completely sickening.

Last week, ICE arrested and separated a father and son after a routine check-in. Six-year-old Yuanxin had just enrolled in the first grade at an elementary school in Astoria. Now he's in custody, alone. ICE won't say where. This cruelty serves no one. It must end.

Once again there is no heat or hot water in my apartment. What seems to happen is the landlord may be turning it off intentionally and gambling that Housing inspectors won't catch him in time to hit him with a fine. I report it all the time but by the time inspectors come, it's "fixed."

Not the point, but this has been my experience communicating with so many parents. "Hey your son is not doing so well" "You don't have to call us over every little thing lay off him" "Hey your son is very unlikely to pass with only two weeks left" "Why did you NEVER TELL US he is failing??"
They'll say you're overreacting until they start demanding to know why no one warned them

Tuesday was the anniversary of the death of one of my students, who died by suicide and who I deeply miss. That day I took home the book he had been reading in my class and kept it on my shelf. This year, I read the entire book in one day and thought about him and returned it to my classroom shelves

And he did so good!! I've been working with them to get them to talk to each other (not take turns talking to me). So, he made his comment and then said to the other students, "What y'all think?" and they responded to him. I'm like, bursting with pride.
