I am positive that every conservative who has ever praised states' rights and decried the onerous power of the federal government will immediately denounce this as an autocratic power grab, right?
More from the party of federalism: "the states are merely an agent for the federal government in counting and tabulating the votes. They must do what the federal government, as represented by the president of the United States, tells them, for the good of the country, to do."

Anyone who didn't see this coming is just willingly stupid. Trump was always clear he wanted to go invade places and steal their oil, and whatever else happened, who gives a crap. This wasn't about drugs, or democracy. He's fine with repressive regimes if they pay up

The President's powers come from the Constitution and Congress. There's no third source.

If neither grant a power—and, more importantly, if either prohibit it—then the President doesn't have it. Full stop.

As it happens, I have experience with high-level government demands to stop an explosive, accurate story from running, and I also have experience with 60 Minutes spiking a story I was involved in, so I have thoughts about the travesty at CBS. If you want some journalism anecdotes, here are a lot:

ICE is arguing in court that US CITIZENS can be detained, handcuffed, and biometrically screened unless they can prove citizenship on the spot. And that a REAL ID isn't enough. This isn't border security. It's a "papers-please" America where freedom is conditional and innocence comes last.
