One of the cool things they don't tell you when you sign up for chronic illness is that at least twice a year you won't be able to accomplish anything at all and you get to spend a few weeks wondering if it's a temporary flare up or if something broke inside of you for no reason and you are dying.

Dunno how anyone is out here posting takes when it is so statistically unlikely that you will by chance arrange words into takes that are not bad

Not a fan of the NYT Crossword today

Something I find myself wondering about is why amateur western authoritarians think the middle powers of the world would want to sign on to their hamfisted, apocalyptic clown show dystopia. The CCP has nearly fifty years of proven experience in the application of jackboots.

I am concerned the recent developments are bad.

No one knows what's going to happen, but fear is not a plan.

I'm not a discourse participant and for my own health I need to disengage from the news cycle a bit.

"can't" covers both books that weren't published traditionally and which this particular retailer doesn't have in stock.

"wouldn't" covers titles I don't consider worth a hardcover purchase and several series I absolutely do, but which are prohibitively expensive to get all at once.
My last 4 years on goodreads are divided pretty cleanly between books I bought as first editions and books that I wouldn't or can't get as hardcovers.

Had a coupon today for a discount hardcover. It was hard to find something to upgrade from e/audio.

Long overdue data backup is complete. I put this off for over a year but I think it is time to take on Windows 11.

I feel I am still idling beside the exit marked 2020 on the highway of human social decision making. It reads

Re-Orient the Economy to Prioritize Human Flourishing

and I watched as everyone gave it a glance and shrugged, hauling ass towards Fuck You Got Mine.
My dad has told me many times about how when he was a kid in Scotland in the late 40’s and 50’s, there was no talk of the war. It wasn’t taught in school, it was if it had never happened. I guess a societal decision to decide to forget for the purposes of moving forward
I get that it’s like, one way we survive as mammals, but the degree that we already memory-holed so much of the Spring of 2020 is astounding

Little proud of myself for not knowing there was a new Cormoran Strike book released this fall until it came up as an discount ebook offer today.

An outcome I think is low probability but worth considering is that the failing bastion of establishment conservatives finds a way to get out from under trump to clear the deck for Haley, while Biden remains burdened with the perceived Biden baggage. These court decisions are the first opportunity.

Most of the time I feel strongly that it is important to reach consensus regarding any significant action in which other people are involved, but when dealing with other people I am often reminded that everyone is stupid except me. It's fraught.

Sometimes I think I should participate in public discourse but then I see the public discourse and I think I should keep doing crosswords instead.

I was enjoying Call of the Sea for the limited stream time I got last night but it seems like this motion sickness issue is just built into first person perspective games for me now, at least when I play them on my good monitor. Sucks.

I had this reaction to the thesis statement in the first episode of Rurouni Kenshin. Karou's kendo philosophy (master the sword to protect life) is naively wrong, but Kenshin has lived in reality (swords are for killing) and prefers to believe Karou's hopeful version.
I does lend a kind of glamour to talking about books and writing them? In the same way that Jung and Campbell just are making shit up, but the shit is kind of glorious. In other words, I would really like to believe in Sendak's vision for the same reason that animism would likely improve my hikes.
