Those on an H1B cannot return to the US from tomorrow (Sunday) unless paying $100K. This is an out-of-the blue presidential action. We’ll see software engineers stranded abroad.

One easy to predict outcome: those on US visas will travel less… for work, for conferences etc.

I, for one, welcome the “abundance” fight. It shows the left can fight Trumpism while wrestling with how we can be better than we’ve been.

I have no interest in “actually the government has been doing great” liberalism.

I’m going to stake out the conservative position here, one I genuinely hold, and it’s “I refuse to socialize the risk of you doing new building in the wildland”
I’ve watched a lot of libs on this platform talk about how we need to do right by wildfire victims and offer them coverage. But I think this really, really needs to be emphasized:

This is not sustainable. The state does not have enough money to cover property owners

I was not prepared for how difficult it is to feel good as an adult day to day. There’s always something to bother you and I don’t like it. I suppose that’s what this thread is for.

Word of the Day is ‘uhtcearu’ [ucht-kay-aru, with the 'ch' as in the Scottish ‘loch']:

fascinated by a rhetorical strategy i see all the time now, which is making up an extreme edge case to argue against doing anything for the public good, and doing this from the putative left.

Every January I get an urge for hot dogs, so I buy a pack. The problem is that when you have a pack of hot dogs in the fridge, the solution to every snack problem is “why not have a hot dog?”. I’m on dog three.

I know this is an extreme example. But we can’t take American tech dominance for granted. The list is long of industries where America no longer dominates.

late with this because i was running a fever and trying to cough up a lung, but Wednesday was the birthdate of Ralph Carr. for anyone who doesn't know that name, he was a great American.

Carr was the 29th Governor of Colorado, but that is not why he deserves to be remembered. quick 🧵.
