I was my father’s sidekick on his bulk of the book arguing for a massive overhaul to #Auspol integrity. Dad was sure it was Dutton who’d demanded the scuppering of public hearings in NACC. I disagreed. I argued that there were people in Albo’s Cabinet scared of sunlight. Pretty shocked by culprit.

national integrity commission and other vital democratic reforms The Saturday Paper can now reveal that within Albanese's cabinet, the fiercest resistance to wider public-hearing powers for the NACC came from Albanese himself and other senior ministers from New South Wales. Sources familiar with the cabinet debate said the prime minister and others were worried public hearings could expose people who were never accused of corruption to reputational damage simply by being called to give evidence in public. Albanese overruled push for public NACC hearings
The head of the National Anti-Corruption Commission, Paul Brereton. «Dreyfus always saw the commission as more than a vehicle for punishing the guilty.
He believed it had to change the culture of public administration," a senior source tells
The Saturday Paper.
"From the start he pushed for broader discretion to hold public hearings, not to run witch-hunts or humiliate people but to send a clear signal that the old standard - that as long as something wasn't technically criminal, it was acceptable - no longer applied. That was the tension in cabinet.

DFAT has now confirmed Australians and others have been abused by Israeli authorities after their abduction from the flotilla.

Assaulted and injured. Deprived of sleep and medication. Still illegally detained.

The PM and Foreign Minister must urgently demand their safe release.

This is horrifying. In the face of this horrendous proposal, #auspol, we need to back an independent Palestine and a two state solution.

Today, the ABC reports that a top statistician quit a study into whether Woodside’s North West Shelf gas plant was destroying the Murujuga rock art after the WA govt misrepresented his team’s key finding.

“Someone who had a key role is saying what we've long known. WA govt misrepresented the facts"
Don't believe the spin. Pollution from the gas export plant is destroying the ancient Murujuga rock art.

It was a really good session for the National Press club. I especially liked the casual and succinct batting away of the moderator's sky-news-like "concerns". And all the answers to the audience questions. No fluff. Absolutely stellar.

Absolutely spot on

Super interesting. Thanks for the share.
Shame about Albanese being adamant about not having another referendum in his term, a 4 year cycle to get a bit more longer term planning in place would be great, but I guess it also depends on who is doing the planning and what they are planning for...

Australians' mental health is going backwards. A better way is possible with a wellbeing agenda. .Do any of our political leaders have the courage to face these facts? @mattfisher441 #auspol #wellbeing #mentalhealth
What should Australian Governments do about ‘mental health’?
Along with climate change and ecological damage, Australians face an equally important challenge of exposure to stressful social conditions leading to declining psychological health for millions.

Why it matters
The most effective non-violent protest hits the economy on a weekday. Even a fraction of those who oppose the war withholding labor and spending for one day sends a measurable signal to leaders and corporations.

“We are told by leaders that we are the future. But when it comes to the ongoing pandemic, our present is being stolen right in front of our eyes.”

Incredible speech by Violet Affleck who warned about the ongoing dangers of COVID & Long Covid, & advocated for masks and clean air at the UN today!
