I was trying to describe to someone from a different country why US politics has driven me so insane for the entirety of the 21st century, and I boiled it down to this: the media, and public discourse generally, refuses to address the two most important things happening in front of us!

Nobody could have foreseen a guy who ran a campaign based on staying out of jail and retribution would be a bad president.

So, a lot of people have been dunking on me for my analysis of what to expect in the 2028 Presidential election. Most clearly didn't read the material, or wanted to dismiss all of it over trivia. "Ok doomer" was common, but none actually looked at my predictive record. Here are some highlights. 1/n

Look, I'm glad we're having a conversation about the hypocrisy of the legal logic used by America's gun nuts. But can we stop pretending this is a new thing? They have never advocated for universal access to firearms. They only want their team to be armed. www.washingtonpost.com/politics/202...
Conservatives, liberals shift gun rights arguments after shooting
Some gun rights backers cite Alex Pretti’s gun as a justification for his killing in Minneapolis, while gun-control supporters dismiss its relevance.

So I watched the shooting video frame by frame and it looks like:

1) They were beating a struggling man with batons

2) His jacket opened revealing a gun in his waistband or lower back

3) The agent in gray grabbed the gun and was walking away

4) THEN the other agents shot the man in the back

Bluesky: Squirrels getting in bird feeders is a problem

Me: Why don't we give squirrels bird food vouchers

B: That won't work

M: Wouldn't it be funny if you could give vouchers to squirrels

B: You’re so dumb

M: The following is sarcasm: Give them vouchers

B: YOU SQUIRREL HATING MONSTER

Please read and share this. It shapes all my thinking about the future of the US right now, and it explains why Trump and the GOP are behaving the way they do.

There is a near zero chance a Democrat will be sworn in as President in 2029, no matter how people vote.

'Trump Has Already Rigged the 2028 Presidential Election': US Defence Insider
Regardless of how people vote, the chances of a Democrat Government coming to power in 2029 is now virtually nil, argues Brynn Tannehill

I try to avoid hyperbole when it comes to Trump policies, but this is absolutely frickin’ insane—on about eleventy different levels.

Massive, systemic Fourth Amendment violations because … reasons.
ICE secretly told its officers that any time someone has been ordered removed, ICE can break down their door.

It has been accepted for generations that the only thing which can authorize agents to break into your home is a warrant signed by a judge. No wonder ICE hid this memo!

In Trump's telling, the US are the equivalent of the Nazis
Trump: "No nation is in any position to be able to secure Greenland other than the US. We're a great power. Much greater than people even understand. I think they found that out 2 weeks ago in Venezuela. We saw this in World War 2 when Denmark fell to Germany after just 6 hours of fighting."

It is instructive to compare @hunterw.bsky.social’s report on the deranged Trump press conference with Luke Broadwater’s article in the @nytimes.com, which saw fit to mention Trump’s comments about his Little League career but to leave out his racist rant about Somalis and other immigrants.

What's remarkable is not just that Trump is so loathsome and narcissistic that he doesn't care when an innocent woman is killed in a protest unless and until he finds out that her dad was a fan of his ... it's that he's so disregulated he *can't help but say so out loud*.
Trump: "ICE is gonna be too rough with somebody. They're gonna make a mistake sometimes. I felt horribly when I was told the young woman had the tragedy. But when I learned her father is - I hope he still is, but I don't know - was a tremendous Trump fan. It's terrible. It's so sad. It just happens"

Compare & contrast. This is Trump’s demand for Greenland. And this is Hitler’s for the Sudetenland.

There is no difference. The language. The unstoppable need to dominate. The megalomania. It’s the same.

And Keir Starmer’s response is appeasement. We are in that moment.

Yet another example of the idiocy of the Supreme Court’s immunity opinion: If Trump invades Greenland, even for the most insane reason (like not winning the Nobel Peace Prize) and against our obvious national interest, it’s an “official act” that can never be held legally accountable

As I understand it, the rationale of the cops and cop-defenders is that the rhetoric in the Facebook comment could have agitated someone else into doing something violent or illegal.

Here are some of the problems with that theory.

The Mayor of Miami Beach then sent the cops to her home.

Four GOP Senators.

At most four Repubs in the House.

Together they could stop nearly all the mad-king's rampages. They would be known to history as Profiles in Courage. They might/would lose the next election. But people have sacrificed a lot more, for a lot less.
I can't repeat this enough.
I've said this before and I'll say it again.
It would only take a tiny handful of Republican Congress members or senators to stop the slide of America toward authoritarian fascism, but nope. They're all in.
