Here it is, the signature soundtrack of Oakland Zoo (sound UP 🎶)

Gibbons make these whooping sounds for many reasons -- to send an alert about predators, as mating calls, to announce their territory to neighbors, or to strengthen social bonding.

Manuscript submitted - what @zhejiang0pterus.bsky.social and I initially thought would be a quick paper redescribing a handful of specimens but grew into 53 specimens, for which we traveled to 10 states plus DC... with some exciting implications.

This adorable oreodont family has had quite a journey. Paul Miller made this mount for the U of Chicago Walker Museum in 1924. They were transferred to the Field when the Walker shut down, then loaned to the BYU museum for 60 years. The oreodonts are now back in Chicago. #FossilFriday

Get really into dinosaurs. That's my recommendation for a happier life. Each day, I get news like "Look at this big freak that used roam the Earth!" or "Ya know the big freak you already loved? Fossils show it was even more freakish!" and it's a blessing every time.

This #FossilFriday, we have our museum's most recognizable fossil: Fish-Within-A-Fish! Featuring Xiphactinus, a large predatory fish, with the smaller Gillicus in its gut contents. It was found and collected by George F. Sternberg in 1952, and is now an iconic part of the Sternberg's collections!

Well my memory was wayyyy off but I found it!!! It's from Dinosaurs: Lifestyles of the Big and Carnivorous, produced by Standard Deviants (an edutainment troupe) in 2001. The rest of it was completely erased from my memory. I presume it was a library rental
In the back, a red cartoon Oviraptor (labeled "Oviraptor") holds eggs and looms over a nest in a prairie. In front of it is a visual of two Oviraptor heads. The left head is surrounded by flowers and labeled "Egg Nurterer". The right head is dressed as a pirate and labeled "Egg Robber".

Is it a lizard? Is it a snake? Maybe a 'false snake'?? As that's what its name means in Gaelic!

Hello to Breugnathair, a new fossil from the Jurassic of Skye with a curious mix of snake & lizard features, showing that early squamate evolution was complex

Fossil found on Skye is new species of fanged Jurassic reptile
Experts say the lizard-like creature, which has been given the Gaelic name Breugnathair elgolensis, had lived about 167 million years ago.

New #paleoart posted to #Patreon: woolly mammoths around a duck-filled lake. Accompanying the hi-res and WIPs of this image is a discussion about mammoth colour: the uniform red-brown mammoths of classic palaeoart seem unlikely now. Check it out at www.patreon.com/posts/night-...
#fossil #sciart
A herd of mammoths, with three large individuals up front, and lots of smaller, more distant individuals in the background, surrounding a shallow Pleistocene lake. They stand on browning, yellowing grass in front of a blue, partly cloudy sky. The mammoths are variable in colour, some being dark, some pale. A juvenile mammoth, blonde all over, has broken ranks and started chasing mallards around a pond. He has made a little grebe nervous. Why has this baby mammoth started attacking other species? Well, animals are a lot like people, Mrs. Simpson. Some of them act badly because they’ve had a hard life or have been mistreated. But, like people, some of them are just jerks.

If you’ve never seen the comic, here it is:
Far Side single-panel cartoon by Gary Larsen. It shows two vaguely chimpanzee looking creatures on a branch. One is grooming the other, and pulls a light hair from his fur, saying “well, well— another blond hair… conducting a little more research’ with that Jane Goodall tramp?”

The naturalist Jane Goodall died today at 91. Hope, she argued, is not merely “passive wishful thinking” but a “crucial survival trait.” Revisit a conversation with Goodall, from 2021: nyer.cm/F55JtsS
