My latest pre-print is out:

"Pareidolic Illusions of Meaning: ChatGPT, Pseudolaw and the Triumph of Form over Substance"

I really enjoyed this one, where I juxtapose LLMs & pseudolaw to argue both create illusions of meaning that trick users.

but to me the biggest stumbling block for conversation is that if you are someone who actively promotes these tech you have to recognize that the experience most people are having of “AI” is forced imposition, enshittifying systems that worked better before

The lying and hallucinating is bad, but I actually think the creepiest thing about ChatGPT is the extreme flattery. I understand why the lying and hallucinating happens, roughly - I do not understand why it lavishes everything you say in so much flowery praise.

we have failed as a society to train people to communicate, the way we teach students to write (when we bother to) is the most bland, anodyne crap, all while making them go to college for reasons that even we can't explain beyond "you need it to get a job." Kids don't get why they're going.
Talked with a soon-to-be college grad about AI use for term papers.
“I could not have passed college without it”
“It’s too difficult to think through a thesis and write out a bunch of paragraphs about it”
“My field isn’t a writing field, it’s technical”
“I don’t understand why they need us to write”

I really admire this poem by Dane Holt. He takes that particular ‘flatness’ of grief and finds a playfulness within it… which is so hard! How on earth do you play with flatness? Like this:
