Quit cycling when smartphones arrived. We lose cyclists all the time here & drivers are given slaps on the wrists for their carelessness or outright rage. Cyclist is still dead btw.

Nah, smartphones are useful tools.
The same sort of arguments were made about calculators and probably anything else because ‘Children Are Awful, Aren’t They?™️’

It’s a good way of keeping track of where your kids are.
And if you include them in media literacy it will help.

for sure; not dismissing the role of technology at all... but i know my peers with kids who do still live as they were raised, so that discipline is there... but it doesnt connect with our 35-40 yr old kids (NOT immediately raised on ipads & smartphones) the way culture connected with us at that age

Smartphones definitely play some role in the diverging trend, but I suspect the biggest factor in both the US level and the trend is the amount of per-capita driving.

I think we as a culture have been dastardly unfair to all the artists who have made heavy-handed critiques of smartphones and social media in the past. They have been proven undeniably correct in all matters. We can't even say no one warned us

This worked out great, i could just call up imdb and print out pics and bring them along. Then came the era of smartphones, and it became even easier. Until the day in 2015 that i tried it… because i wasnt following his career closely.

I thought this article was interesting because it shows that connectivity is not just about building networks. Even though internet coverage is improving, many people still cannot go online because smartphones and data plans are too expensive.

Years ago I asked a PhD economist to explain how a car engine worked. He couldn't even start, but he drove a white SUV.

Is ignorance of technology a "cognitive bias"?

Was the bias before 1965 when "planned obsolescence" got significant mention different from today?
No smartphones!

Dumb phones are the way of the future! We used landlines for eons, we can do it again. When the government can track the contents of smartphones across entire *neighborhoods*, you know we have a problem. These phones will get some of us murdered or disappeared. Worth it? I don’t think so.
