It was an incredibly rewarding and packed ACJS, with @acjsdocsummit.bsky.social facilitation, multiple presentations, and new leadership roles! BUT can't think of a better way to end the week than to see our team's newest paper released! journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/...

And if Ed Davey is looking for ideas for his next by-election campaign, this would be my suggested tattoo

Been working on my Libertines 🤝 Lib Dems tattoo concept, and have chosen some quotes…

It’s John Stuart Mill on the right arm…

The UK’s economic problems are quite deep-rooted. The best summary I can offer is “we don’t make enough valuable, productive stuff and sell it to the world any more”.
Things like planning and energy no doubt play a role in that - but I don’t think they’re enough to fix it on their own

Well this is less than ideal given the post above.

74% of MPs still use X frequently, according to a study by PR firm 5654 & Company.
Not ideal...

The UK role is small, of course, but it's demonstrably not nothing.
Net zero spread from the UK around the world. Our approach to renewables has been widely copied (often better). The COPs have made important progress (not enough, but..)

Good note on it by Nick Stern here:
bsky.app/profile/acjs...
“The UK’s leadership on climate change, particularly the elimination of coal from its power sector, is providing an influential example to other countries. So, too, it’s climate change legislation and its Climate Change Committee.”

Nick Stern
“This new report is muddled and misleading. There is far more progress being made around the world to decarbonise the global economy than it suggests."

Nick Stern responds to ‘𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘊𝘭𝘪𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘗𝘢𝘳𝘢𝘥𝘰𝘹: 𝘞𝘩𝘺 𝘞𝘦 𝘕𝘦𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘙𝘦𝘴𝘦𝘵 𝘈𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘰𝘯 𝘊𝘭𝘪𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘊𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘦’ by the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change.

I absolutely adore the idea and can't wait to see it during #ACJS meeting in Denver, Co!
Well, if I somehow scrape together enough to actually make it overseas 😅.

Of course the drivers for my investment in insulation, solar & batteries (& maybe a heat pump in due course) was a mixture of environmental concern and high electricity costs.

I see that @andrewsisson.bsky.social has picked on that graph too

bsky.app/profile/acjs...
The key thing is that electricity supplied is NOT the same as electricity supply. It’s just a measure of how much electricity was used. Which dropped due to higher energy efficiency in the 2000s.

As @domw.bsky.social says, it’s like saying water supplies have fallen if people use less water

Yeah, I conceded that point - it might *appear* boring but can be very rewarding bsky.app/profile/acjs...
Very much agree with this.

Also - doing the gritty work of reforming and improving the state can be really worthwhile and rewarding (with the right leadership and a fair wind).
There is signal in the Musk/Cummings noise if you clear away the ridiculous egos - reforming the modern state via brute force is, basically, impossible. You can damage things, fire people, cut spending but the vast majority of things the state does are deeply embedded and critical functions.

Assuming you saw this, Chris, but if not, a thread from Andrew in response to "what would you spend £10bn on?"
bsky.app/profile/acjs...
Oh lord that’s a good question. Is that per year or over a few years?

First thing would be building a top class warning / response system - a lot of software and modelling, and pretty cheap.

Next, probably go to the most dangerous river catchments and pay hill farmers to store water on their land

Thanks!
Scotland is included in that map (and looks v interesting I think). It just looks a bit smaller because the hexes are all the same size.

Honestly, just a list of things boomers don’t like, so why bother mentioning them?
bsky.app/profile/acjs...
- City regions outside London (invest a lot!)
- Build more homes
- Strengthen local government
- Energy (actually the current policy is ~ the best option)

Airbus Corporate Jets (ACJ) has been around for some time as the luxurious corporate jets division of Airbus. There are now some 200 ACJs flying around the world, but Airbus wants to build its presence in a buoyant market – despite or even thanks to the pandemic. https://airinsight.com/?p=57723

Just in case it needs saying: no, Britain is not at risk of going bust chasing net zero, and this is a ludicrous thing to say.

There is some short term pain, but this phase of net zero should be good for growth in the long term, and any other course now would be worse
