Hi David. Yes, fortunately with Aleyrodidae it tends to be the larvae or pupal cases that are more distinctive than the adults. The dark patterning and on Hawthorn are enough to identify this one as Ash Whitefly, Siphoninus phillyreae I’d say.

Our DNA library is made possible thanks to the support of our funding partners.

Today’s featured specimen is a tiny hemipteran from the Aleyrodidae family, collected in Guanacaste, Costa Rica. This record was made possible through funding from the Walder Foundation.

Yellow ladybird (Propylea quatuordecimpunctata) on our raspberry bush!
They’re not particularly rare, but like their red counterparts, they’re very useful:
they feed on aphids, whiteflies (Aleyrodidae), scale insects, and the larvae and eggs of certain beetles and butterflies. 🐞

Sternorryncha as a group show a fascinating set of shared traits: flattened, plant feeding forms with defensive wax. Whitefly puparia are immobile and fused to the plant. Psyllids retain mobility but share traits like wax production for defense. #entomology #Hemiptera 🧪 #Aleyrodidae #Psylloidea

At the local dog park, there were thousands of teeny tiny gnat thingies. Had no idea how to ID something so small I could not get a sufficient photo with my cell phone, so I google 'teeny tiny yellow gnat' and eventually learn they are "Whiteflies" (family Aleyrodidae), a type of true bug.

Cockerell (1898) described this whitefly species as with "...ribbon-like rays of glassy secretion, not much shorter than itself. These rays are of a bright lemon yellow".

Now we have some live photos to show it! Lemon yellow indeed. Aleuroplatus vinsonioides (Aleyrodidae)
