People used to believe in being part of something bigger than themselves.
See port and starboard weren’t just directions, they were parts of the ship so everybody avoided those awkward “your left or my left” conversations. That’s the port of the ship, don’t care which way you’re facing, port side is that side. It’s only “left” if you’re facing fore, but it’s always port.
