#Anocracy
Yeah, the slide to anocracy is going to hit competitive autocracy and quite possibly keep on going. We’ve lost the ability to slam the brakes on this and it will increasingly get worse.
I am increasingly convinced many of us won’t be able to vote in 2026.

the greatest predictor of civil war, as barbara walters's work on civil war illustrates, is a state heading towards anocracy

now chat, which state in the world is heading in that direction (hint: it's not the UK)
The UK civil war stuff is so funny to me because it is so clearly wishcasting. None of the factors that make civil war at least theoretically possible in the U.S. right now prevail in Britain. Even polarization is different.

"anocracy" is such a godawful term and the etymology makes no goddamn sense

yeah i think she overreads her work, but anocracy-> political instability stuff is replicated by other people in poli sci. don't think you can quantify it like she does

Anocracy fucking sucks.
An embarrassingly obvious point, but...

This. Is. Illegal.

If anything like the rule of law were in force, Trump couldn't arbitrarily increase a tariff because he is annoyed.

In important and increasing ways, the rule of law in the US no longer exists.

The USA is transitioning from a democracy to an anocracy.
It is in very dangerous territory and the future of the nation as it has previously existed is on a precipice.
Strong, educated, compassionate leaders are required very soon, or the old social order will be forever consigned to history

It's been an anocracy since January 6th... 🤷🏽‍♂️🤷🏽‍♂️

The country is sliding from democracy to anocracy. Many folks are still in denial and think the courts will save us.

This is worth your time, as is learning the word, “anocracy.”

Gonna be completely honest, the idea that we have an anocracy that gets called "center-" anything seems wildly optimistic.
June 28, 2025 at 5:28 AM
I think that it's quite plausible that we get an anocracy under Beshear or Spanberger or Dan Caine or Milley or whoever, with the primary purpose of making sure that this nonsense never happens again.

The anocracy and civil war literature probably applies here.

Her work, based on analyzing data from over 250 civil wars since World War II, has identified two key predictors of civil war: 1) #anocracy, a fragile state between #democracy and #autocracy, and 2) identity politics & downgraded groups—communities that perceive a loss of power or status.

What is anocracy?

Anocracy is really what we have been for about the last decade.

Are we still a democracy? A republic? A constitutionally limited democratic republic? Or an oligarchy, an anocracy? I suppose we'll find out soon.

i hold that both of these are true (post-Redeemer America was an anocracy)
it is fundamentally absurd to say that the United States is now an anocracy but was not an anocracy when half the country did not have meaningful elections

Haley losing the state she was born in and abandoned the governship of (for a hubris-filled campaign) should be disconcerting for anyone who didn't think we were headed to an anocracy-cum-autocracy on Jan 20, 2025. Please stop deluding yourselves. There is no "Holy Hamburger" on the menu.

And considering how Biden's been ruling with an iron fist, I doubt the US has gained any Demo points by continuing Trump policies
