we need to make Chi Osse's life hell (or at least make his socials unusable) until he runs against HJ

(this is actually existing utilitarianism)

by numbers this is inarguably true, its relative effectiveness and place in American history can only be judged in hindsight

No Kings is like an order of magnitude bigger than the civil rights movement, if you want to place it on a scale of historically notable activism. What’s your plan though? I’m all ears!
taliajane.bsky.social
it is no wonder that 50501, a movement of radlibs who are very upset but don’t want to get in trouble, would be boosting superficial activism.

superficial activism has its place, but if that place is front and center, it kills whatever movement it is skimming off the top of.

i do not think the president can pardon a crime he ordered the commission of, because the order reinstantiates a conspiracy to commit to that crime
proptermalone.bsky.social
to temper that a hair, i think people generally need to start wrapping their head around what prosecutions into a likely field of pocket pardons look like, because it's not going to be anywhere near as satisfying as you want it to be

my guess is D+5 for 2026 and D+12 for 2028
khartsun.bsky.social
yeah, but 2020 is around the margin where the midterms seem like they will be
khartsun.bsky.social
the problem is that polls have the generic ballot being around D+3, not above D+5 where we need to be
khartsun.bsky.social
Is there a way to reduce this before 2026?

Either the legislature reestablishes its Art I authority, we rewrite an entirely new governing document, or we acquiesce to unconstrained executive lawlessness

Cf @unavaleable.bsky.social's point that it's apparently easier to accept the end of American democracy than the sixth party system
diabolicalengineer.bsky.social
Given that the ADA requires the executive to essentially prosecute itself in situations like this, how do we fix it going forward? Say in the example of the first 3 years of a first term. Normally the statute of limitations running into a new president would deter, but nobody seems to consider that

let me put it this way: it is a sign of something changing when someone like David Brooks says something like this. it means that people who read David Brooks on purpose will read it.

is there anything we can do *before* 2031?
khartsun.bsky.social
why can't the Democrats crack majority-minority districts beforehand?

i've said for a while that Trump's whole selling point is basically giving people permission to be their worst selves
ryanlcooper.com
two big things happened imo: Trump winning in 2016 apparently proved they could utterly wallow in all their worst instincts and still win, and Elon buying Twitter and turning it into a) the default conservative comms platform b) an openly Nazi sewer
khartsun.bsky.social
How should we prepare for the scenario where they do this before the deadline, just in case it happens? Is this what we should be doing?

we must start advocating for the Junji Ito pinwheel in IL, the removal of MD's last Republican district, and NY Dems having a 25-1 map ready to go for when the VRA is(?) repealed RIGHT NOW.

and, 23.1K follower account, that means that you need to tell people to contact their state legislators.

Long story short, an actual Nazi doxxing ring. Enough people reported them that they went away for like 12 hours and then Elon personally brought them back. The site is dead. If you’re still on there, go lock your account right now

If Kavanaugh does decide to kill the VRA, I don’t think we can whitewash the extent to which this is RBG’s legacy. This SC is a lot of what she left behind

We have to act in accordance with the world we live in, not the one we wish we did, esp with such severe consequences

also, what would be the latest time that they could release a decision for it to affect 2026 redistricting?
khartsun.bsky.social
I'm sorry about the fact that I'm going to be summoning you into various doomers' threads today
khartsun.bsky.social
we can pick up 4-5 seats in New York, 3 seats in Illinois, and 1-2 in Wisconsin on top of this at a minimum. I think @theophite.bsky.social can elaborate.
khartsun.bsky.social
what time-frame would be necessary to do this? (honest question)
khartsun.bsky.social
here's a 25-1 VRA compliant map

Very glad my governor is willing to fight fire with fire when it comes to redistricting. I've been tinkering with my congressional map. Here is a map that sends 25 Democrats to Washington, is VRA compliant, and has some pretty fun shapes. Maybe I should send it over to some folks I know in Albany?
New York with 25 solidly Democratic districts and 1 solidly Republican district. The previous map but with clearer borders. A close up of NYC and Long Island. Map shows minority-majority districts, of which there are 10. This includes 2 that are majority Hispanic, 1 that is majority Black, and 1 that is majority Asian along with 6 "minority coalition" districts.

Theophite's assumptions are my base case as well: Google and Msft (fine), META (fucked), OpenAI(smoldering crater), Oracle (not fine). Also think companies like Coreweave and Anthropic are also pretty boned. The use case exists, but the business case remains ephemeral because the moats are fake.

at present, what is happening is that all of the capex out to 2027 is being done in 2025. the idea is that if there are first-mover profits on AI, you can buy them out of free cash flow right now and then pull back on capex if the market for AI is limited.
sharonk.bsky.social
i genuinely do not see how exactly we are going to see all this AI/data center demand work out in the long run? like, thankfully most of investments are with cash not debt, but even then, what exactly is the case for AI investment here?
khartsun.bsky.social
the modal outcome of a Republican trifecta in 2032 is "A clique of junior officers make Pres. Kyle Langford stop being locally negentropic after he attempts to redistribute America's single female population to right-wing gamers and then rule the DMV while the rest of the country disintegrates"
khartsun.bsky.social
given the current composition of the Republican Party and the likely composition of the Republican Party in 5 years, this is a late dynastic collapse scenario inevitably leading to a warlord era or military rule

I'll be writing about today's Supreme Court arguments in Callais v. Louisiana—which the GOP justices have likely teed up to nuke what's left of the Voting Rights Act—but for now, read up on the practical consequences of this case: a net 19 extra House seats for Republicans. slate.com/news-and-pol...

On Wednesday, the justices will take the extraordinary step of rehearing Louisiana v. Callais.
