This thread from Senator Wyden is fire.
Meanwhile, if you’re just a regular person with a bank account with a TINY BALANCE, paying rent and bills, and the bank merely SUSPECTS that there has been ANY sort of “adult activity” in connection with your account? CLOSED no more banking for you!

Jury nullification is good and it's a good sign for America's path out of authoritarianism that juries are recognizing their power to nullify.

Conservatives: “Private industry will come to help SNAP recipients.”

Private Industry: “Here is a plan to help—temporary discounts to SNAP recipients for groceries since they are getting NOTHING right now.”

Conservatives: “No, no, no. Not like that.”
The USDA sent an email to grocery stores telling them they are prohibited from offering special discounts to customers affected by the SNAP funding lapse.
I'm aware of at least 2 stores that had offered struggling customers a discount, then withdrew it after receiving this email

Give officials discretionary power over this sort of thing, and some of them will abuse it. Trump's abuses are unusually shameless and intrusive, but the problem began before him and will almost certainly continue after he's gone.

We're witnessing the most aggressive, fanatical crackdown on free speech in my lifetime. The speed and breadth of government censorship and private sector and nonprofit capitulation has been astonishing. As has the lack of urgency/silence from people who've long claimed to care about this stuff.

You “regret” mistakes. This was not a mistake. They deliberately shackled these people and distributed video of them being humiliated. They detained them for days after.

What they regret is that, this time, their gleeful anti-immigrant violence wrought negative consequences for the administration.

They used Kirk’s podcast to praise his alleged commitment to free speech, while announcing that they’ll be using the full force of the federal government to silence the left.

Just so we’re clear on how disingenuous this is: Vance mentioned Soros by name. Soros has never promoted violence.

The free speech activist who built a list of professors he worked to get fired for their speech must be celebrated for his support of free speech, and anyone who quotes his speech accurately in context will be fired and/or face state punishment by the champions of free speech, do I have that right?

This is preferable to terrorizing black neighborhoods. But it also just confirms what we all knew: the whole operation is about projecting the image of safety for tourists, politicians, and white residents, not reducing crime. (Which terrorizing black neighborhoods also would not accomplish.)
National Guard soldiers called into service for President Trump's law enforcement surge in D.C. have been assigned to spread mulch at federal monuments.

Normally the Park Service does that, but the administration laid off the workers.

Great thread!
A lot of people gravitate towards "One Simple Trick" accounts of resistance and social change. In part because complexity doesn't make for potent narratives but also cuz folks want to be able to claim a monopoly on impact.

In contrast I believe in a diverse array of strategies:

If there’s any solace to be had right now, it’s that all of these videos show multiple people recording everything on their phones.

It really is inspiring. Keep it up.
Tonight at the Rhode Island Ave metro station in DC a volunteer shouted to warn ICE was present, per a tip.

Agent screamed at her to leave: “These people are coming home from work. They don’t gotta hear your voice yelling at them.”

But they need feds surveilling them?

When the antebellum Slave Power whined of abolitionist "agitation," censoring the mail and demanding speech be suppressed, they didn't so much fear abstract moral arguments. They were infuriated, and threatened, by the simple factual accounts of what they were doing. And they weren't exaggerations.
"How bad slavery was" is worse. Much worse. Much worse than you think, much worse than you're taught, much worse than museums depict. Worse.
