Medical Autodoc

All in all, I'll probably add a bunch of shared hardcoded functions (like `max()` to get the largest value) to Autodoc, to allow folks to implement better custom functions without running arbitrary code. I can already see how those can be useful in my own mods.

The surgeon cuts deep, his procedure augmented by a holographic overlay of the patients internals provided by autodoc (the K1-LD-AR3) ... but can you trust the AI? Inspired by #MothershipRPG #ttrpg #SciFi #horror

Non-protip for peeps just starting #TheOuterWorlds2 today: complete the quest "Perilous Journey to the Grove" ASAP cause you get the P.A.L.E. "double jump" boots from it and they come in handy. I nearly missed this quest #Obsidian #RememberJackson

racing ahead with new features every release, these days one can even use quarto-autodoc as your documentation engine for software packages, and even write a quick business letter with branding! One should also mention @mystmd.org but there seems to be a slower development cycle, i believe they had

#Evri, I'm going to ask #Autodoc to find another courier, you're just unforgivable, every time failed delivery time after time, why bother even giving an estimate

I appreciate that if I type 'Au' into Google, it thinks that obviously either I need car parts from AutoDoc or to look at pictures of Audrey Hepburn. The answer, of course, is yes.

"autodoc" is still in use:

There's also an entry for "medbot".

In any case, this project is about the words themselves, not about the concepts. I'm not sure about the history of automated medical systems within SF.

Radiological Medical Autodoc

This is the sci-fi concept of an “autodoc,” an automated medical device that can rewrite genes, fix any injury, etc.

It’s fiction, a trope invented by an author who had to come up with a way to “deus ex” his protagonist.

Trump thinks it’s real.

Larry Niven called it the Autodoc, a sci-fi device that will bring a human back to health from almost any injury or disease.

"that didn't have invisible magic tech, but robot arms injecting, reading, cutting and suturing" is how that should have read. But the idea is "Prometheus" autodoc "medbed" is too mechanical and invasive, while "Elysium"'s "medbeds" are invisible nanotech that fits with the magical thinking.

I was listening to the QAA episode on "medbeds" and was screaming at my phone because it was definitely "Elysium" that was the inspiration for the conspiracy theory, because the example QAA used was the autodoc from "Prometheus", but that did have invisible magic tech, but robot arms.

To allude to another Niven story, he did seem to believe that Carlos Wu's autodoc was a real thing.

I'd say that someone on his team read about Niven's autodoc, but if any of those techbros read the Ringworld series they'd focus on becoming Pak and nothing else. (Maybe also doing rishathra with vampires.)

Oh, and it's an "autodoc", as every science fiction fan knows.

Are we talking Nivenesque or Alien autodoc, a Bacta tank or just a plain old grift bunk? #medbed
September 28, 2025 at 4:06 PM
This bugs me, since I used the term "medbed" in my 2012 science fiction novel ONLY SUPERHUMAN and other stories in that universe (since I didn't want to reuse Larry Niven's "autodoc"), and now I'm afraid the term will end up with connotations I don't want.
