#OnThisDay - 31 January 1953, the catastrophic East Coast Floods affected #Colchester's Hythe. Alice Farthing recalled being woken by a strange noise. It was her bed afloat in waist deep water, knocking against the bedroom wall in Hythe Station Rd.

Renamed the Odeon in 1961, the building entertained Colchester audiences for decades before closing in 2002. Today, it stands empty but striking, its faded Art Deco frontage a reminder of Colchester's golden age of cinema.

As a former Brit, the one thing that really hit me last week on my trip to the UK was that Colchester's WHSmiths is no a longer a WHSmiths. Now it's called TJ Hooker or somesuch.

Had a long but exciting day discussing the potential content and stories for the redevelopment of Colchester’s Natural History Museum. Amongst all the exciting ideas, the main thing I took away was “everybody loves hedgehogs”.

#OnThisDay - 8 January 1858, the #Essex Standard reported that "The Pieman" - a granite obelisk on #Colchester's High Street - had been bought by Charles Wire for £3.5s.

It was taken to the cemetery to be used as a monument to his wife.

This day January 2nd (1899) construction
began on Colchester’s new baroque styled
Town Hall. Designed by Sir John Belcher with
a 162-foot Victorian clock Tower it is now
grade 1 listed.

#OnThisDay - 2 January 1899, work began to build #Colchester's grade l listed Town Hall, the third on the site. It took just over 3 years and cost around £50,000 of which £12,000 was raised from the public.
