I think it’s genuinely much more to do with where they settle in the USA. The larger the local diaspora, the less likely to anglicise. Ime that’s less true in England- my husbands family also anglicised despite living and working in Jewish north London.

Elle finance les routes villageoises, construit des mosquées, soutient les écoles, les centres de santé et assure même les cotisations funéraires. Sans elle, de nombreuses localités seraient à l’arrêt. Pourtant, derrière cet engagement social remarquable se cache une contradiction économique profonde. Vivre en location, construire pour donner gratuitement Une réalité interpelle : la majorité des membres de la diaspora vit à l’étranger sous location, parfois dans des conditions précaires, tout en construisant aux Comores de grandes maisons modernes, souvent laissées fermées ou offertes gratuitement à des proches.Le discours est récurrent : « La maison de notre fille ne se loue pas » Cette phrase, devenue presque sacrée, révèle une mentalité déconnectée des réalités économiques. Comment comprendre qu’un individu accepte de payer un loyer chaque mois à l’étranger, mais refuse de tirer un revenu légitime de son propre bien immobilier au pays ? La peur sociale plus forte que la logique économique Derrière ce refus de louer se cachent plusieurs facteurs : • La pression sociale et familiale, où louer est perçu comme un manque de générosité.• La crainte des conflits liés aux loyers impayés ou à la dégradation du bien.• Une vision culturelle où la maison est avant tout un symbole d’honneur, non un actif économique.• Une méconnaissance de l’immobilier comme outil d’investissement.Résultat : la maison devient un poids financier, et non une source de sécurité économique. Construire sans rentabilité : une richesse immobile Construire pour donner gratuitement revient à immobiliser un capital important sans aucun retour. Pourtant, une maison louée pourrait :• Financer les études des enfants,• Soutenir les parents restés au pays,• Préparer la retraite,• Réduire la dépendance aux crédits et aux loyers à l’étranger. Au lieu de cela, la diaspora continue de s’endetter à l’extérieur tout en maintenant une richesse inactive aux Comores. Une diaspora déboussolée face à la réalité économique La diaspora a parfaitement compris le développement social, mais elle a largement négligé le développement économique individuel, pourtant indispensable au développement collectif.Un développement durable ne repose pas uniquement sur la générosité, mais aussi sur la création de revenus, la rentabilité des investissements et la transmission d’une culture économique saine. Repenser la vision de l’investissement Il ne s’agit pas de renier la solidarité, mais de la rendre intelligente et durable. Louer sa maison n’est ni une honte ni un abandon des valeurs. C’est au contraire : • Un acte de responsabilité économique,• Une protection contre la précarité,• Une contribution indirecte à l’économie locale. Conclusion La diaspora comorienne reste un pilier essentiel du développement local. Mais tant qu’elle continuera à vivre en location tout en refusant de rentabiliser ses propres biens, elle restera prisonnière d’un modèle contradictoire.Le vrai défi n’est plus de construire des maisons, mais de construire une conscience économique.
