The last light on San Joaquin Mountain (elev. 11,556) and the last flowers on the Ericameria, with a bonus appearance of a very small crescent moon.

“Specimens growing near Los Alamos exhibit a concentration of radioactive strontium-90 300,000X higher than a normal plant. Roots reach into a nuclear waste treatment area, mistaking strontium for calcium due to its similar chemical properties.”🤯

The nectar source looks like rabbitbrush (Ericameria nauseosa?). Magnet for late summer/fall butterflies here in western MT.

An unnamed 6529ft (1990m) peak at Walker Pass carpeted in flowers; too hard to ID at this distance, but I’m taking a wild guess of Leptosyne bigelovii given its extensive presence nearby and similar color.

#bugoftheday #2 is a longhorn-cuckoo bee in the genus Triepeolus. These bees are kleptoparaistic, laying their eggs in the nests of other bees (typically Eucerine bees) and feeding on their pollen provisions

California Spreadwing (Archilestes californicus) chowing down on what I believe is a Braconid wasp in the tribe Agathidini. These wasps are all over rabbitbrush in the summer, presumably looking for hosts to lay eggs in, so they're not uncommon prey-items for the local aerial hunters #bugoftheday #4

I now live less than an hour from a national park, and we don't go often enough! Sunset is the best time. Also, here are #nativeplants at White Sands National Park. I believe it's a chamisa (Ericameria nauseosa).
