#FAIRnes
This is what happens when obscenely wealthy oligarchs own our news media.

We need to bring fairness doctrine back. And we need more reporters like you Kyle!

OK, so you have no idea what the Fairnes Doctrine was or how it worked. Got it.

It did not apply to news, period.

It required only that broadcasters dedicate some small time to matters of public concern, and that there be differing opinions expressed -- not necessarily at the same time.

In 1969, the court "ruled unanimously that the Fairness Doctrine was not only constitutional, but essential to democracy".

there's this idea in our culture i'm truly sick of that the ignorant parade to insist they're actually good people: compulsive fairnes, aka bothsidesism, which equivalates the worst with the pretty good, and implies a false middle is the optimum as if compromise is always the only acceptable path

I remember when Reagan ended the requirement. Without it Rush wouldn't have been commercially viable.

"In 1985, under FCC Chairman Mark S. Fowler, a communications attorney who had served on Ronald Reagan's presidential campaign staff in 1976 & 1980, FCC released its report on General Fairness Doctrine Obligations stating that the doctrine hurt the public interest"

The abolishment of the Fairness Doctrine was a critical breakpoint here, I think. It isn't the only thing (it precedes the internet) but it got taken out in 1987 and laid the groundwork for right wing AM radio and Fox News after it en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fairnes...

Jackson specifically says the practice is "intolerable" with respect to "incarcerated individuals," explaining that changing conditions of confinement may give rise to new, legitimate claims that SCOTUS has an obligation to docket at the very least. www.supremecourt.gov/orders/court...

Betteridge's Law seems to apply, but it's not a terrible article if u disregard the hed.

In fairnes to the hed, it's arguable that the AIs suggested some things that gave humans some new ideas.

The idea of going through old papers and finding stuff that had been overlooked seems moderately useful.

Completely agree, it is and has always been rotten to the core. Therefore a new structure must ne built. There are so many things that must be done.

Hell, repealing Citizens United and reinstituting the Fairnes Doctrine (highly modified to reject punditry) would be a great start.

You mean like trump already is? There must be accountablity for lying to the public for propaganda purposes. Period. Donyourself a favor and read about the faitneww doctrine. The over turning of which has lead directly to the rise of right wing propaganda networks.

One of the things Regan did was take away something called the *FAIRNESS DOCTRINE*

Now. My Canadians. My Europeans. My fellow #Americans. You wanna know why we're so fucking dumb. A big part is this going away. /19
