Something a bit different for #HillfortsWednesday - here's an OS map of Cadbury Castle in Somerset from the 1800s!

Notice how it adds "Or Camelot" to the label 👀

"Arthurian scholars" have long identified this fort, next to the River Cam, as the legendary "Cam-elot"

Great Hetha Hillfort. Sitting at 343m high, it has magnificent views over the surrounding hills . There is also evidence of at least nine circular hut platforms and some animal pens.

The (very!) approximate late bronze age outer boundary of the hillfort at Mellor, #Derbyshire. It was found and excavated following parchmarks appearing in in the hot summer of 1995. #HillfortsWednesday

Today, Penbury Knoll is a little-known, tree-covered gem of a hillfort at the NE margins of #Dorset

Here it sits, gazing down upon the mighty prehistoric and post Roman boundary ramparts of Bokerly Dyke / Bokerley Ditch

In 1911, George Heywood Sumner wrote of Penbury Knoll hillfort that “the thorns are wizened by searching winds. The pale yellow bent grass, the moss and the heather, all staved and stunted – life is a grim struggle on Pentridge”

We quite like it up there 🤣

The hillfort of Penbury Knoll #Dorset was surveyed by the incomparable George Heywood Sumner in 1911

Sumner traced the rampart circuit and noted how much of the interior had been disturbed by post Med gravel extraction

Burton Point is an #IronAge promontory fort on the southern end of the peninsula. They are regarded as high status settlements. It is similar to hill forts found on rocky coasts of Cornwall, Wales and the Isle of Man, and rare nationally. #hillfortswednesday #Archaeology #Wirral

Penbury Knoll is one of Dorset’s less well known hillforts. Situated where Cranborne Chase meets the New Forest

Its tree-covered ramparts are easy to miss on the Ordnance Survey although the circuit is clear on LiDAR, here resolved by the Environment Agency

As one final plug for 'Tarv', here for #HillfortsWednesday is Kensett's/Griffiths'/Tarv's description of a winter night's encounter with (?were)wolves, facilitated by "the camp brats" playing in the snow, at (presumably) a linear earthwork near the downland hillfort that might be Ditchling Beacon...

The glorious contour-hugging ramparts of Penbury Knoll hillfort Pentridge Down, Cranborne Chase, command wide ranging views across #Dorset #Hampshire and #Wiltshire

A place to heal

The earthworks have not been investigated, but are probably Late Bronze or Early Iron Age

A rocky defended islet on Ynys Môn/Anglesey for #HillfortsWednesday ⛰️🌊

Dinas Porth Ruffydd lies on the southern cliffs of Ynys Gybi/Holy Island & is defended by a single rampart. A late C3rd Antoninianus & 2 Romano-British bronze ox-head bucket-handle mounts were discovered here..🤔 🐂

The view across the Lake Saimaa in winter. The Pisamalahti hillfort is in Sulkava Finland, on a rock with 55-metre-high perpendicular rock surfaces above the lake. On the eastern side there is tens of metres of 3-m-wide and 2-m-high stone wall. #HillfortsWednesday
