I saw this on threads and I thought oh yeah that makes sense and I actually asked if I should not post tomorrow, and then it took me a few minutes to realize that that is the most ridiculous thing I have ever thought, but if it took me a second, I can’t even imagine what everyone else is thinking

Has everyone lost their ever loving fucking mind? I’m not kidding. Why the FUCK am I reading post after post saying we need a social media blackout tomorrow???? I don’t know who started it, but I certainly know why. Think about this. If we actually succeed, if we prove that a general strike has legs, WHO IS GOING TO COVER IT IF WE DO A SOCIAL MEDIA BLACKOUT???? And I know I’m going to get comments saying “I didn’t see that,” or “you’re misunderstanding,” no, I’m fucking not, just because you didn’t see it doesn’t mean I didn’t. Let me be crystal clear, between now and the day social media dies… there should not be one single fucking day that we stop posting, stop telling the stories that need to be told, stop educating and learning and spreading the power of the people and those fighting back.

By the end of the essay, however, that latter judgment has expanded well beyond the content of Tooze’s books into a sneering indictment of his whole public existence. The breadth of interests, audiences and sympathies that for so many of Tooze’s admirers mark his signal virtue stood for Anderson as proof of his political unreliability. “Tooze spreads himself widely, and his accents and formulations vary from place to place,” Anderson wrote. “That’s often the price of a growing reputation [and] shouldn’t be taken too seriously. To criticisms of inconsistency, he can in any case reply quite reasonably that nothing he has written falls outside the parameters of a basic commitment to liberalism as it has developed in the west from the time of Wilson and Lloyd George to that of Geithner and Macron.” (In the context of the New Left Review, these points of comparison could hardly be more damning.) Anderson’s implication that Tooze is essentially keeping two sets of books – one set of accounts for his lefty graduate students, another for his discussion partners at Davos – becomes the basis for his essay’s bitter final judgment: “In today’s world, the question can be asked: how far does that differ from running with the hare and hunting with the hounds – indignant sympathy for the hare, awed admiration for the hounds?” Tooze does not hide the devastation he felt on reading Anderson’s essay, or the fact that he still thinks about it often. He told me that his disorientation had much to do with his longstanding admiration for his antagonist. Tooze has subscribed to the NLR since his 20s, has written for it several times, and says he always read Anderson’s essays “religiously”. Perhaps predictably, Tooze rejects much of Anderson’s critique. He is also plainly offended that his attempt to be honest about who he is, and where he’s coming from, was taken by Anderson as a kind of shiftiness, or even hypocrisy. Over the past decade or so, Tooze’s politics have shifted notably leftward. Yet Tooze still feels it imperative to acknowledge “how deeply I am the product of the circumstances I was raised in”. As he put it to me at his office, last April, “I take that more seriously than the average academic leftist. Because I don’t imagine that by virtue of thinking a bunch of radical thoughts, I can get more than a little bit of the way towards escaping my professional upper-middle class identity. I’m a senior professor at an immensely rich private university. Where do I get off kidding myself about this?” In another conversation, in October, Tooze noted that he had done “a lot of activism around green politics and central banking and naming and shaming the IMF economists”. His voice rose to an exasperated pitch as he imagined a conversation with Anderson: “It’s like, ‘Show me your cards. Where the fuck have you been on any of these issues? What’s your position on climate? Where were you with the Green New Deal? Where have you been on Gaza?’”

New Black Series Jango encounter MAFEX Mandalorian-Style Boba, which I do not strongly recommend since the antenna on his helmet disintegrated and then the replacement I was sent also broke. I made one better and it gives me material to work with for repairs, but you shouldn’t do all of that. Plus I think he is cooler looking in his own show with the tight pants and some dings on that helmet that seems to be sexually attracted to projectiles and rough surfaces, in defiance of the helmet painting station aboard his ship, the Slave 1. I REFUSE TO CALL IT ANYTHING ELSE. Just kidding. Like I give a shit. Call me woke, but I don’t know that children’s toy names should contain the word slave. It’s also not the coolest name for a ship in a show where you are trying to make its owner a…hero? The Gentlest Gangster? Goal was unclear there a bit. Hmmm, oh yeah. Until it became a liability during Me Too, Taibbi's response to criticisms of the Exile book used to be...

He then fell out of touch, re-emerged a month later, and agreed to meet me for lunch at a Manhattan restaurant. I arrived late, and he was visibly annoyed. There was no boyish smile. “I just don’t see why you’re doing this story,” he said. When I told him that Ames was now living in New York he grew more agitated. I mentioned some of the Exile pieces of his I planned to write about, and he said, “That was covered in the book.” I told him yes, that was true, but the book had been published in 2000, and, frankly, I didn’t think it was very good. “The book wasn’t good?” he said. “No, I didn’t think so,” I said. “My book?” he said. “Yes, the Exile book. I thought it was redundant and discursive and you guys left out a lot of the good stuff you did,” I said. At this, Taibbi’s mouth turned down and his eyes narrowed. “Fuck you,” he snarled, and then picked up his mug from the table, threw his coffee at me, and stormed out. The restaurant was packed with customers, and they all turned to watch as I sat there, stunned, coffee dripping from my face. The waiter arrived with the milkshake Taibbi had ordered. After wiping myself off a bit, I went outside, where Taibbi was putting on his coat, and asked him to calm down and come back into the restaurant. He walked up to me, glaring, beside himself with rage. “Fuck you!” he yelled. “Did you bring me here to insult me? Who are you? What have you ever written? Fuck you!” I tried to talk to him, but gave up when he walked away. I went back inside, paid the bill, left, and began walking up Sixth Avenue. Halfway up the block, I turned around, and Taibbi was behind me. “Are you following me?,” I asked. He walked toward me, raising his arms as though preparing to throttle me or take a swing. “I still haven’t decided what I’m going to do with you!” he said. “Are you kidding?,” I asked. And at that moment I thought he might be kidding. There was part of me that thought it must have been a prank. I half expected some old Exile accomplice, maybe even Ames, to jump out from behind a tree with a camera. Maybe they’d been setting me up all along. Maybe there was horse sperm in the coffee. But the anger in Taibbi’s eyes was genuine, and, after some more glaring, he fumed off. That was the last I saw of him. Eventually, Taibbi sent lengthy responses to e-mailed lists of questions. “I once considered Mark my best friend,” he wrote. “When I left I never thought I was burning my bridges to The Exile permanently, and being shut out as I have been from all contact with the paper I helped build during these seven years, not even having my letters answered at any time by Mark or anyone else on the paper during that period, this is one of the truly unhappy things that has ever happened in my life. Both The Exile and Mark’s friendship were very important to me, as were the memories of both of those things, and I’ve lost all of that now. That I’m now being accused of not only wanting to harm the paper, but desiring Mark’s maiming or even his death, only deepens my sadness about all of this.” He went on to say that “most people by the time they get old are full of regrets about the things they never got around to doing when they were young, but thanks to the paper I won’t ever have that problem.” But, he concluded, “if you romanticize any of that ugliness, I’m pretty sure you’re missing the point.”
