Every once in a while, I think about how, after the US Guardian called out the UK Guardian et al for their transphobia, she went after Mona Chalabi, one of the journos at the former, and basically compared her to Tommy Robinson:

Thank you to @monachalabi for this powerful graphic, which starkly pictures the severity of the Israeli government’s policy of mass death through forced starvation. For over four months, the Israeli military has imposed a total blockade on Palestinians in Gaza, refusing to allow in aid, even as hundreds of aid trucks line up at the border crossing, prevented from entering. The US-Israeli aid distribution sites have become massacre sites, as Israeli forces shoot at Palestinians lined up trying to get food. Now, Palestinians are now collapsing in the streets and dying of hunger, with 85% of Palestinians in Gaza experiencing the fifth stage of malnutrition — the most dangerous phase that leads to irreversible harm, even if food becomes available. This isn’t just starvation, it’s mass extermination by hunger. From the moment the Israeli government declared its plan to take over aid distribution, its genocidal aims were abundantly clear. Throughout the genocide, the Israeli government has openly used starvation as a tool of annihilation, targeting humanitarian workers and restricting aid to a trickle or blocking it entirely for months on end as Palestinians across Gaza starved to death. The echoes of the past are not lost on us. The haunting images of desperate and starving Palestinians fleeing gunfire and forced to crowd into metal cages for hours on end as they await aid invoke the suffering to which many of our own families were subjected during the Nazi Holocaust. As anti-Zionist Jews, we have a moral imperative to draw attention to those parallels. Never again is now.

It's not even just Ukraine - journalist Mona Chalabi had a graph on this topic, claiming that the big offensives and legally suspect actions tend to happen overlapping with Superbowl, Memorial Day, Met Gala, US elections and other news distracting events

Via @monachalabi: Since January 19 (when the ceasefire came into effect) Israeli airstrikes have killed 92 Palestinians and wounded 822 according to Gaza's Ministry of Health. In fact, Gaza was bombed the day that the ceasefire came into effect.

Today, we will be told again about the suffering of the people in one bar of this illustration. We will be told to honor 1 year of their pain by the same journalists who have ignored 76 years of occupation, apartheid, imprisonment and killing. Where possible, I used the midpoint of a range because it's always hard to find exact casualty figures. The estimate for Palestine comes from an open letter published last week from 99 US medical professionals who have worked in Gaza. They believe this number is still an underestimate. Sources: Library of Congress (WW1 data), Archives of Iranian Medicine 2013, Population and Development Review 1995, Defence Casualty Analysis System, America in Vietnam by Guenter Lewy 1980. The Israeli death toll is from October 7 (695 Israeli civilians, 373 security forces and 71 foreigners) as well as 727 soldiers since October 7.

Two graphs. The top one shows mentions of Israelis and Palestine in deaths in the New York Times, and the two lines are roughly the same, although the number of mentions of Israeli deaths is always more. The bottom graph shows actual numbers of Israeli and Palestinian death. You see that the number of Israeli death has leveled off, while the number of Palestinian deaths has continued to climb. monachalabi The New York Times has consistently mentioned Israeli deaths more often than Palestinian deaths. What's more, their coverage of Israeli deaths is *increasing* as more Palestinians are dying. Israeli deaths have been mentioned the most in the past few days, even though Israeli deaths have plateaued since 10/12 and Palestinian deaths have skyrocketed Please read the notes below on this data - it's crucial context. In addition to the bias in sheer volume of coverage, there was a huge difference in the language used. The word "slaughter" was used 53 times in these articles since 10/7 to describe the deaths of Israelis and zero times to describe the death of Palestinians. The word "massacre" shows up 24 times in reference to Israelis and once in reference to Palestinians. The articles rarely mention the names of Palestinians who die - instead using terms like "mourner", "resident", "assailant" or "militant". In one article, a murdered Palestinian was simply referred to as… Sources: This data was compiled and analyzed by Holly Jackson, a researcher at University of California, Berkeley based on 991 New York Times articles posted between 10/7 and 10/18. The articles were selected if they contained any of the keywords: Palestine, Israel, Palestinian, and Israeli. 500 articles were automatically tagged to have mentions of death or words related to death. Holly read all death related sentences in these articles and tagged whether the sentence was talking about Palestinians, Israelis, both, or neither (i.e. something unrelated). The data on deaths is from OCHA (but Palestinians are struggling to count and register deaths so their numbers are likely to be an undercount).
