The last of this year's monitored storm-petrel chicks on the Island of Nólsoy in the Faroe Islands has just fledged, into the teeth of the winter storms - their next challenge is to make their way south, to the seas off Namibia and South Africa!
And that's a wrap! The last of the European #stormie chicks that we monitored on #Nólsoy #FaroeIslands has fledged. This field season was a huge success, with 55 eggs laid, 47 chicks hatched, and 34 chicks fledged!

The last of this year's monitored storm-petrel chicks on the Island of Nólsoy in the Faroe Islands has just fledged, into the teeth of the winter storms - their next challenge is to make their way south, to the seas off Namibia and South Africa!

Ahhh shame :( hope the Petrel Station has more success! The chambers for the Nolsoy nestboxes are massive - they seem to really like them. Though only ~45 of 98 boxes with signs of use so far this season

Latest watercolour: a European Storm Petrel (Hydrobates pelagicus) over a choppy sea. One of my most magical experiences was spending a night with the colony on Nólsoy, Faroes as these birds returned to their burrows after dark. Listen to an example here: xeno-canto.org/957958 #birds #watercolour

So interesting - we had our first ever miniature Stormie egg in the nest boxes on Nólsoy in 2024 too! Truly tiny. A further indication of poor adult condition & difficult conditions in 2024? thanks for sharing. All the best for this year's work!

There's a Faroe Islands live app which allows you to see live video of places across the islands. It's currently snowing there and looks truly stunning. Pictured are Klaksvík, Tórshavn, Toftir, and Nólsoy. 🇫🇴❄️❤️
