I came away with several topics from the presentation I want to read up on, including the relationships between the canneries, the unions, and Native and nonNative fishermen.

The presenter was Tim Troll, author of Sail for Salmon: The Early Years of Commercial Fishing in Alaska's Bristol Bay.

When folks asked remote presenters a question, the presenters would just see the empty space at the podium. What’s more, we didn’t have enough folks watching Zoom to see if there were questions from remote attendees. Faceless voices are really tough when communicating in one’s nonnative language. 3/

I’ve seen people delight in salting/burning/shooting nonnative species. They see their invasive status as a free pass to be monstrous. Feeling justified in killing is not a reason to lose your compassion.

Vinca minor, the nonnative escapee Lesser Periwinkle, blooming along Boulder Creek.
Highly invasive in places like California's coast range, it doesn't seem to be spreading much into Colorado's wildlands possibly because it's too cold and dry here.

Halogeton glomeratus, the nonnative Saltlover, blooming near Pueblo. As its name says it doesn't mind salt-poisoned soils. Just about the last plant to start blooming in Colorado. 🤔

we dug up a boxwood and while the process was a major pain in the ass, absolutely no regrets. so many popular nonnative plants, while not invasive, are so ecologically inert they may as well be rocks

I don't get why they're that scared. As a nonnative English speaker, I find no one should be scared of any Browning. It's too close to brownies so it can only be a good thing 😁

Rewriting and polishing a brilliant nonnative English speaker’s book about Miles Davis is quite challenging. Ferreting out the nuances of a different language and the language of music (hard for me to understand) are making this an entirely new thing that I hope I do justice to. ✍️🎺

What does the research say? 📚
-Early-season phenophases (like flowering) tend to advance with warming, sometimes more in nonnatives.
-Late-season phenophases are more unpredictable—advancing, delaying, or staying the same. (4/8)
