I've just looked at EPC of a newbuild some relatives just bought - actually not bad at all on fabric, I think about 45 kWh/m2.a in PHPP, with gas combi - EPC 84, a solid B

With passivhaus designs we've usually got a B (provided MVHR is on the "list") - need PV to reach A

Exciting to see progress on the retrofit and expansion of the Filwood Community Centre in Bristol. Greengauge is providing building physics, including PHPP modelling, and building services support to the project team led by Hayhurst & Co Architects.

I tried the easyPH PHPP (now in Freedom Units) modeler last night for the first time. It strips out a ton of secondary user calculations which is many 1/3 workload. But heat and cooling demand raw numbers are hidden (missing).

Well this has been a very helpful book on PHPP.

Seems with a few measures over the next few years I'd be on my way to achiving #AECB Retrofit Standard (<50kWh/m2/a and ACH <2.0).

Warm roof insulation, mix of EWI and IWI, suspended floor insulation, MVHR and many air tightness measures.

I do whole house retrofit plans for people. For these I use up to date carbon factors and the PHPP energy modelling software so avoid all the ridiculous absurdities of EPCs and the foolish requirement to ignore some insulation that reasonable documentation says exists. I often recommend heat pumps!

It will be newbuild so can consider the spf at design stage using phpp (this does a bespoke calculation rather than using scop)
Underfloor heating is straightforward way to get high spf in newbuild

#passivehouse peeps, is the ~new "easyPH" compatible with #PHPP "Variants" worksheet? I see it's there but hidden, and I didn't see a mention in the manual.

Alternatively, is modeling in easyPH then exporting into the full variants sheet an option. NB: not being used for certification just fiddling

Yes, for PHPP you’ll have to test the building as a whole. Not sure about SAP, but in the US unit tests are often required by code. Sometimes a sample of units can be tested instead of every single one. Not a bad idea to test each unit to ensure proper compartmentalization.

2/.. heating degree days under the code; they are colder than the av coldest temps used in PHPP. Design heating systems for that, so PHPP plus backup for the very coldest days.

Passive House isn’t built on faith.
It’s built on PHPP.

Every window, wall, and seal calculated before a nail is struck.

Guessing builds drift.
PHPP builds proof.

Which are you trusting: hope or numbers?

🚫 #MythBusted: Passive House buildings don’t need thick walls!

#PassiveHouse focuses on energy-efficient, well-insulated walls, with thickness depending on construction type and climate. PHPP helps designers calculate optimal U-values and wall thickness based on factors.
