In many 17th century homes, walls were finished with white plaster, fresh in appearance but easily damaged. A border of glazed tiles protected the plinth from moisture and knocks caused by sweeping and scrubbing. 🐦

The imp looked him up and down. "You're, what?" it asked. "Thirteen? Fourteen? I'm guessin' you asked a friend or a brother for the name of a demon, and he gave you mine so you wouldn't hurt yourself." It lay back on its plinth and crossed its hands behind its head, staring at the ceiling. "If you want takeout, I'm your guy. If not... well you can dismiss me whenever you like." The summoner groaned and kicked at the floorboards. He stood deep in thought for several seconds. Then he turned to the imp once more. "Can you get me beer?" he asked. The imp sat up and grinned. "Now we're talkin'!" it said. "What can I get you, O master? Coors? Budweiser?""

William Etty RA is York's most famous artist, born on 10th March 1787 & died on 13th November 1849. His statue, outside the city art gallery, is placed so he can gaze at the city walls that he helped to save from demolition in the 1839s and 1840s.
