#Proto-noir
#NowWatching Crime and Punishment (D:Josef von Sternberg, 1935)
"...more of a jazzy 'best of' interpretation of Dostoevsky's novel, but it's a worthy psychological crime thriller come proto-noir that distils the essence of Raskolnikov's torment into an entertaining, theatrically staged rendition."

Day 30. Best film noir ending.

In the proto-Noir I AM A FUGITIVE FROM A CHAIN GANG, Paul Muni is a veteran who can't escape a brutal, inhumane system (sound familiar?). His final line as he fades into the dark is an unforgettable moment, one of the greatest film endings ever.

HBO Max added 30 classic crime films in Nov — from proto-noirs like THE PUBLIC ENEMY (1931) to essentials like OUT OF THE PAST (1947).

Including their Criterion titles, they now have nearly 100 pre-1960 noirs.

There’s even a dedicated #Noirvember section. (New adds in alt text.) #FilmSky #FilmNoir

I’m going with #CrimeOfPassion
Ahead of its time in the 50s. A “Proto-Feminist” Noir? #BarbaraStanwyck plays a successful career woman who gives it all up to be a suburban housewife. It does NOT go well!

The #NoirvemberChallenge continues! Day 4: Film Noir Ahead of Its Time. My pick this year is proto-incel lady-hating mass shooter psychonoir The Sniper.

@zackquaintance.bsky.social Can I humbly add a frequently overlooked gem?

While far from perfect, DARK CITY (1950) is well worth a watch. It’s a crime noir that frequently takes place in the daytime, has almost proto-slasher elements, and great performances all around.

I'll ask again for the daytime crowd: is proto-noir real or not? #Noirvember
November 3, 2025 at 4:29 PM
Sure, noir didn't just pop up out of nowhere. Starting in the late 20s if not earlier, everyone from Jacques Tourneur (The Leopard Man) to Josef von Sternberg (Shanghai Express) to Marcel Carne (Le jour se leve) to Yasujiro Ozu (That Night's Wife) made proto-noir films.

#NoirvemberChallenge Day 3: The Film Noir That Made You a Fan. Maybe more like melodramatic proto-noir, but I'm gonna say The Shanghai Gesture. Ona Munson's draggy wigs! Bratty sub Gene Tierney! Victor Mature in a fez! A goth girl's gateway drug to the hard (boiled) stuff.

Dead End (1937) dir. William Wyler 🎬
Just watched this excellent proto-noir with Humphrey Bogart playing a gangster who returns to the bowery slums that he grew up in. Joel McCrea and Sylvia Sidney are looking for a way out. The young bowery kids steal the show. #Noirvember #filmsky #filmnoir

Proto-noir at most, but Glenn and I like REMEMBER LAST NIGHT? so much (and it's shown so seldom) we don't feel bad about including it. The Channel series are meant to entice people to check out connected groups of films; they're certainly not the last word in genre classification!
REMEMBER LAST NIGHT? is high grade James Whale (and a lot of fun) but in my recollection too good-natured to feel like a noir

Dan Kuroto is at it again, this time with 2 new Gashats from #KamenRider Outsiders: Tokimeki Bridal and Proto Mighty Action X Noir!

Great opp for those that missed out on the original Proto Mighty Action release as it contains the same sounds 👉 https://buff.ly/4hjVWGB

Definitely. I consider HALLOWEEN to be the first true slasher the same way MALTESE FALCON is the first noir. There are tons of precursors and proto-whatevers but those are the moment all the tropes fully clicked into place and kick started a cinematic movement.

Movie 7: "Freaks" (Dir. Tod Browning, 1932, USA)

Browning parlayed the success from "Dracula" into this flawed yet fantastic cultural artifact. The plot is more proto-noir than horror, and it's a shame Browning's preferred cut no longer survives.

#spookyseason #classichorrorrewatch
Movie 6: "The Ring" (Dir. Gore Verbinski, 2002, USA)

Overall a respectable remake of "Ring," with the exception of gaps in narrative logic and an underdeveloped backstory for Samara and her mother. Its fantastic visuals and thematic flourishes don't fully compensate.

#spookyseason #newtomehorror
Movie 5: "Frankenstein" (Dir. James Whale, 1931, USA)

James Whale's "Frankenstein" is like a burrito: not authentic to its origins, but is now a bonafide icon. It's not an accurate adaptation, but it has all the right ingredients in play and enchants.

I've always loved the strange and stylish THE LADY FROM SHANGHAI, possibly because it feels so much like proto-Lynch. Murky, paranoid, and a parody and pastiche of film noir with one of the greatest visualisations of a descent into insanity and depravity. Terrific extras on the Indicator blu-ray.

OUT OF THE FOG (1941)
Proto-noir, based on the play THE GENTLE PEOPLE by Irwin Shaw. John Garfield as a thoroughly evil gangster-wannabe. With Ida Lupino, Thomas Mitchell and John Qualen. With great atmospheric cinematography by James Wong Howe. Recommended.

So everything nominated for the first-ever Oscars is public domain now! This includes The Racket, a pessimistic proto-noir about Prohibition actually made during Prohibition. Despite being an Oscar nominee, it was lost until rediscovered in Howard Hughes' collection. archive.org/details/1928...

Apporter les ressources nécessaires pour faire évoluer des proto-étoiles en naine rouge, étoile jaune & géante bleue. Si trop d'atomes sont agrégés, l'étoile s'effondre pour donner un trou noir.

33rd movie of 2024: Laura (1944). Classic noir revolving around a charming woman everybody falls in love with. The standout was definitely Vincent Price, who I had never seen in a non-horror role before this. He's on some jilted proto-incel shit that still feels very timely 📽️🎞️
