She's been in office for 2 years and she's just now realizing the SPOG president is a full blown public fascist?
December 12, 2025 at 8:36 PM
My latest about the newly passed SPOG contract, which isn't great news for Seattle's police accountability or its civilian response. Mayor Harrell just signed it yesterday.
December 12, 2025 at 5:10 PM
CM Rivera, who was not in fact born yesterday (I checked), is surprised SPOG doesn’t treat the city with respect.

Much disappointment. So concern.
December 12, 2025 at 7:43 PM
Gee, maybe if Rivera had listened to literally any of her constituents this could have been foreseen. The writing was all over the wall, SPOG hasn’t even been subtle about the fact that they sees SPD as a tool to use against citizens.

But hey, good thing 6 CMs just voted to give SPOG more power!

The contempt that the Seattle Police Officers Guild holds for its' citizens is incomprehensible.

Imagine if ATU openly hated a large chunk of its' riders, and posted things like this on its' socials.

You can't. It's incomprehensible.

Oh wow, CM Rob Saka has announced he will be voting AGAINST the proposed SPOG contract this afternoon. Unexpected!

Final vote on SPOG contract:

Yes: Kettle, Rivera, Strauss, Hollingsworth, Juarez, Nelson
No: Lin, Rinck, Saka

The SPOG contract passes on a 6-3 vote.

I'm listening to Seattle's City Council meeting now, and we've already heard a few public comments opposing the new SPOG contract.

I also went back and looked at Joy Hollingsworth’s answers to Hacks & Wonks Lightning Round questions about what she would or wouldn’t support in a SPOG contract:

Will Councilmember Hollingsworth’s vote on whether to approve the Seattle Police Officer’s Guild (SPOG) contract reflect what she told voters?

Men spøg til side. Hvornår blev der cool og sjovt at sparke nedad? Tror ikke jeg var på kontoret, den dag det blev vedtaget.

I'm glad Saka voted against the SPOG contract. Too bad he also voted for:
-his own resolution declaring "Defund is Dead"
-defunded bus service to pay for a transit cop czar
-voted for the 23% SPD pay bump last year
-relegalizing blast balls and other crowd control weapons

I wrote him to thank him for his vote on SPOG. I'm sure it won't be long before he does something that will prompt an email expressing my disapproval. You don't have to trust someone to appreciate when they do something good, even if you suspect for the wrong reasons.

Seattle City Council voted 6–3 to approve a new SPOG contract that raises officer pay and expands CARE responders, while scaling back elements of civilian oversight.

We need to hold elected officials accountable for votes that go against their campaign rhetoric. See screenshot below from 2023 campaign season @hacksandwonks.bsky.social interview.

In a district that Katie Wilson won by 16 points we really need a more reliable progressive voice in D3.
December 10, 2025 at 12:58 AM
"This contract is better than the system we're operating under today and the accountability measures... aren't good enough," Dan Strauss says, adding that accountability measures can be hammered out more in interest arbitration. But "we need SPOG buy-in to strengthen accountability."
December 9, 2025 at 11:45 PM
Councilmember Rob Saka says the SPOG contract fails on oversight. No subpoena power, no strong investigations, and no real accountability. He is voting no.

His full argument is up now at The Stranger.

@wilsonforseattle.bsky.social, when you are sworn in, understand that this is who you're negotiating with ^

SPOG is one of the most detestable organizations I've ever encountered. Don't expect them to ever negotiate in good faith.
December 10, 2025 at 6:56 PM
Public comment is now over. The SPMA contract (the other police guild contract in Seattle, for SPD lieutenants and captains) will be voted on before the SPOG contract. You don't hear as much about the SPMA contract because it is less egregiously bad.
December 9, 2025 at 10:49 PM
Some Seattle CMs don't seem to understand "rushed" allegations re the proposed SPOG contract are because it came from Mayor Harrell shortly before the election that he subsequently lost. Passing this contract a few weeks before Mayor-elect Wilson begins her term feels "rushed" in a specific way.
