#SUFFRAGETTE
Just read up on the Suffragette tactics and learned something I hadn't anticipated.

Activism grew to include planting bombs, smashing shop windows and acts of arson. They disrupted communications networks by cutting telephone and telegraph wires and burning post boxes.

Mmm .... they're describing The Suffragette Movement, right?
🤔

I guess using intel and RAF flights to co-ordinate dropping 2,000lb munitions on tents is nothing to the horrors that the PA have perpetrated ...

#OnThisDay in gardening history: suffragette attack on Kew Gardens orchid houses, 1913, one action in the increasingly militant war of sabotage, demanding women be ‘granted’ the right to vote

Today in gardening history: suffragette attack on Kew Gardens orchid houses, 1913.
So; 100 years since some women got the vote (yesterday). Funny how NOW lots of politicians and journalists are falling over themselves to invoke the name of the militant suffragists who fought for …

Watching a PBS series with a suffragette in Sweden who starts a women’s collective to help the issue of a grocery union that is corrupt with selling bad meat and dairy. 1915? Subtitles. Lately it’s hard for me to be focused on subtitles but I’m totally engaged and it’s not hard to follow along

Don’t let them bring us backwards! We owe it to every suffragette, who endured the cruelties of men who didn’t believe we were smart enough to vote, to maintain our rights and freedoms.
My first vote was for JFK in 1960. I distinctly remember all the crises & victories in this post. They enabled me to finish college, work, have a credit card, and raise my beautiful kids all w/o poverty. Every step forward was opposed by GOP, and they won't ever have my vote.

The second reading of Bill S-243. An act to establish a national framework for women's health in Canada.

The Suffragette of 1917-1918 would be pleased.

Zona Vallance, a founding figure of Humanists UK, was born #OnThisDay 1860. Zona was our inaugural secretary – a role equivalent to today’s Chief Executive, held by @andrewcopson.bsky.social – and a suffragette, writer, and powerful public lecturer. 🧵

All men over 21 were able to vote for the first time from 1918, but only women over 30 who met some property requirements could join them at the ballot box.

Full enfranchisement came in 1928.

I remember seeing an anti suffragette poster from the 1800s that suggested if women voted they would only vote for the most handsome candidate, rather than the one with the best policies.

It seems sexists have not managed to evolve beyond that.

Election Day was the best day of that campaign, because we all dared to actually believe to not just be fighting but dreaming, someone made a huge "glass ceiling" and we hung it up over all the volunteers coming and going to knock doors, two people showed up in full suffragette cosplay

I've worked with every single Year-Group from Woodloes Primary this week (including Nursery) and they have all collaborated to create this 'timeline'. I loved helping them to make this, I think it's got some magical 'humanity' running through it. 🙂

I used to borrow his documentaries from the library and fall asleep every night to him talking about prohibition and women’s suffragette movement. Ken Burns is so soothing 😅

I'm officially on the @gandersocial.bsky.social beta! Really enjoying it so far, though the app doesn't seem to have a dark mode which is a bit disappointing lol. If any other Canadians here are on the app, feel free to follow! I look forward to building a community of like-minded Canadians!
