#SXSWi
Mourning the days of SXSWi as the Bay Area debutante's ball.

I remember being at SXSWi in 1999 and there was a talk (I think more than one) on this. They had the incentive and importantly the revenue to innovate. At the time everyone was accessing the Web on a modem, and getting large images to load was a thing, video was impossible. They made it work.

As someone who went from working in a newsroom to working in a library (with some trade and scholarly publishing pit stops along the way) I have a lot of time for this discussion and exploration. (Way back in 2012 we chatted about this at SXSWi - www.slideshare.net/slideshow/ma...)

Ooof, yeah. Any of the big tech trade shows of the last 25 years (more) have absolutely been larded w political speakers in between the technofuture gadgetry demos. SXSWi helpfully breaks out some of the political highlights while pretending its about democracy www.sxsw.com/iconicmoment...

I talked about this on a panel at SXSWi in 2013 (lol)

and about having moderated a super useful high-profile open liveblog for almost 2 weeks during an ongoing flood disaster

trolls were few and easily booted

emboldened by that, we tried the same for local elections and it was trash

@zeldman.bsky.social @ma.tt It was 20 years ago today... Remember this moment? Reprocessed a little with modern tools.

Thanks for coming to Austin! I admire your work greatly! This was the only SXSWi activity for me this year.

#TossbackTuesday 20 years ago today, I got on a plane and headed to my first SXSWi. Haven't been back since 2010, but that first trip was career changing. www.flickr.com/photos/cell9...

Oof. I do sympathize with the challenges of presenting the story of a project as it’s still unfolding. (But still, oof).

I hope you’re having a blast. I def enjoyed SXSWi & film in ye olden times. Im def not jealous. Nope. Not a bit.

One of my all-time fave SXSWi presentations was I think maybe 2008 or 09 - archaeologists using Second Life to model paleo cave sites to try to understand both the psychoacoustic environment & the visual environment by firelight.

I was at SXSWi 24 years ago when Cory Doctorow compared the effects of the extended Mickey Mouse copyright law (the Sonny Bono law) to “the slow-motion burning of the Library of Alexandria.” It rewired my brain the way Do The Right Thing and Public Enemy had done a decade or so earlier.

I went to SXSWi in 2013, he was the keynote

in retrospect I wish I’d trained for the moment instead of skipping his talk

I was a panelist at SXSWi in 2013, and at the moment, my life’s greatest regret is not having trained in an elite military academy with time travel knowledge to encounter the keynote speaker instead of skipping because boring

I’m sorry. I’ve attended SXSWi+f in Austin, tho not in dog’s years, and your voice is sorely needed in those spaces. I don’t mean to sound like I think this is either solved or solvable by throwing a few URMs to the wolves/ to do all the hard work. gatekeepers need to make room for a lot of voices!

Hey @bsky.app - you won!

Last night, I finally deleted my X account for good.

I was part of the Twitter team at SXSWi in 2007. I spent years training people to use Twitter to build brands, and I built a strong community there.

None of that mattered when I hit delete. I'm now on Bluesky.

Yup.

We met at a big reddit/hipmunk party at SXSWi and was there as a "pal of reddit" and I was a wallflower.

I signed up for Twitter when it was introduced at SXSWi in 2007. Anil may have been there. I think I saw him speak one year there. I’ve followed him on social media and his blog ever since. ❤️

Going through my video junk drawer and found a video from a livestream I did while at SXSWi heading to Diablo Rojo to get my Triforce tattoo

My poor camera girl had a strong aversion to blood and never told me, there are multiple points she almost passes out filming this

I miss Rosekitty.

Well this is a damn fine list. Ms. Cox and I were in the same SXSWi session on the future of journalism approximately 73 years ago and I have admired her work since.

I was on a panel at SXSWi in 2013 when he was the keynote speaker, back when everyone still thought he was a visionary clean tech super genius

I peaced out on it because too many people, too much hype, truly did not give a shit, and I’m still glad about it
