#Segregation
Richard G. Hatcher knew civil liberties are not abstract. They show up in housing, public services, and equal treatment. In 1967, he made history as one of the first Black mayors of a major U.S. city, elected in Gary, where he fought segregation and expanded local power. #BlackHistoryInIndiana

Isn’t the point segregation is bad and we should treat people with respect and dignity despite how different we perceive them as ?

'General direction is good', if you ignore attacks on the disabled and immigrants, introduction of Labour's 'section 28', conversion abuse and healthcare bans for trans kids, segregation of trans adults from society, adopting Reform policies to gain 0% Reform voters whilst alienating all on the left

Of course, in real life these rules wouldnt apply to lots of white people, just like the “citizenship tests” during segregation

States would pretty much trust that white people are citizens, and make brown people provide loads of documentation

I am an elderly white woman, grew up in the South during enforced segregation. I left, but I still visit a handicapped relative who lives there. You are absolutely right. Also, anyone who reads the entire story of Trump and the Central Park Five and is not persuaded is not being honest about this.

And people were more mad at the dude that made the segregation post 😭
FAMU can't use the word Black on anything posted around campus related to Black History Month, to stay in compliance with Florida state laws against DEI. Black students can't use the word Black at their Historically Black College during Black History Month.

I’m not going to say that McConnell is morally worse /because/ he is manifestly not racist, but it’s striking that this is a guy who was a supporter of MLK, opposed segregation, and voted to sanction apartheid-era South Africa, and yet was /the/ crucial player in bringing our current moment to pass.

Civil rights pioneer says after almost 70 years, story of the Little Rock Nine still 'resonates' | CBC News

Today marks 58 years since the Orangeburg Massacre—one of the deadliest incidents of the Civil Rights Movement.

Students had been protesting the continued segregation of All Star Bowling Lane when state police opened fire.

Prior to DtMF's win, there were two non-English AOTY winners: Getz/Gilberto in 1965 (English & Portuguese), and Santana's Supernatural in 2000 (English & Spanish). Both appealed to a crossover market through English. Linguistic segregation is one of the hardest locks to unpick in the US market.

Such a great discussion. Last night my family talked about classical music, network tv of the past, how shared pop culture today is both more diverse and splintered into genres and audiences, and the risks of cultural segregation. Glad to read people more knowledgeable than me talk about it.
The degree to which many white Americans live in cultural segregation is underappreciated, I think. You might say Bad Bunny's music isn't aimed at a white audience, but that's what I mean. Black and brown Americans are familiar with white artists; this purposeful insularity only goes one way.
I got into a huge fight with someone for saying that if they don’t know who Bad Bunny is, that’s a them problem. This was a real person, by the way.

If you teach about segregation in baseball, the Negro Leagues, and the Gentlemen’s Agreement, it makes it harder to justify bigotry and it should send alarm bells to anyone posting attention.

Especially since this bigotry echoes in the bans against trans women in women’s sports.

This is definitely true, but it’s also notable that in the streaming era, when all media is broadly available, and most people are choosing their own adventure, the segregation has arguably gotten worse, and inarguably has not gotten better. White America is choosing ignorance.

Fascist cops in #SouthCarolina opened fire on Black students at the SC State College on #ThisDayInHistory in 1968. Protests over de facto #segregation at a bowling alley was met with the #OrangeburgMassacre; the pigs opened fire, killing three students and wounding another 28.

You're alright with trans segregation?

Moreover, I think a lot of people don’t understand the degree to which ongoing cultural segregation was fostered by the segregation in the music industry, from live performances to segregated radio stations and on through to genre categories, which are marketing terms that became identity markers

They like the implied segregation, though. Which is why they haven't drawn more ire.

Obviously they aren't segregated but maga doesn't know that.

“Federal overreach/states’ rights” used to mean “keep your nose out of our slavery/segregation.”
Meaning: Like so many conservative principles, “federal overreach” was really about something else.

Like, oh, let’s say, “states’ rights”. The con is taking it at face value.
Warner on Fox News Sunday: "What's amazing to me is historically the GOP has been about 'let's not have federal overreach.' We've got federal overreach with ICE. We've got federal overreach w/POTUS saying 'let's nationalize elections.' Do you really want ICE agents showing up at polling stations?"

Diane Nash was only in her early 20s when she helped lead the Freedom Rides and organize sit-ins across the South. When others were afraid, she stepped forward. When buses were attacked, she said, “We can’t let violence stop nonviolence.”
Her courage helped dismantle segregation. Young. Fearless.

During Jim Crow, the Klan didn't have to wear hoods. Most whites favored segregation and were against Black civil rights, but it was unseemly to be openly racist. The GOP backlash against Trump's video is because he is brazenly racist, and they'd prefer he not be so public about it.
