Who were the slaves?
There wasn’t any slave since slavery was abolished by a Frenchman named Sonthonax in 1794. Remember that Louverture was the general governor from 1795 until 1801 and he was against slavery.
Napoleon really wanted to but his army was defeated in Vertières.

For anyone confused as to why Haitians are so excited for what happened yesterday; yesterday was the anniversary of Battle of Vertières. Which was the final major battle in the Haitian Revolution where the rebels took the victory. Yesterday in 2025, was the World Cup qualifier match

Haiti qualifies for the World Cup on the 222nd anniversary of la Bataille de Vertières. You'll need to be quite a bit older than I am to remember Haiti's last appearance in 1974, when Emmanuel Sanon beat the legendary Dino Zoff to put Haiti 1-0 up on Italy (they lost the game 3-1).

In that battle Napoleon Bonaparte’s elite troops were defeated by battalions of former slaves led by Jean Jacques Dessalines, who consolidated the independence of what would henceforth be called Ayti or Haiti.

FIFA is trash but how could you not feel joy for these players and the greater Haitian diaspora? Their country and its people's name have been dragged through the mud but I see this as a big F you to those people. And on the anniversary of the Battle of Vertières, to boot.
